Former Jr. Middleweight Champion "Ferocious" Fernando Vargas (26-4) is tentatively set to face Ricardo Mayorga (28-6-1) on September 8th according to the Ventura County Star. While Vargas has lost his last two fights by stoppage and Mayorga has been inactive having dropped 3 of 6 this has the aura of a big fight for one reason. Vargas says it will be his last. One way or another.
"I've got one more great fight in me. People can say what they want to say. This will be the last hurrah. Win, lose or draw. That's it," Vargas told the Ventura County Star.
Vargas who burst on the scene by winning his first twenty fights, including wins over Ike Quartey and Winky Wright, saw his career fizzle after being blasted by Felix Trinidad in 2000. The 12th round stoppage defeat ruined Vargas who appeared gunshy in all his remaining fights. He would go on to be stopped again in brutal fashion by long-time rival Oscar De La Hoya in 2002 and twice in 2006 by Sugar Shane Mosley.
Fernando Vargas is a tremendous example of a fighter with great potential whose courage got the best of him. Facing Felix Trinidad after just twenty fight was a mistake and unfortunately one which Fernando paid for the rest of his career. He simply never was the same.
