Born on June 8, 1911 in Pageland, South Carolina, Van Mungo (Van Lingle Mungo) played for the Brooklyn Robins, Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants over the course of his 14 year career. Mungo broke into the bigs on September 7, 1931 with the Brooklyn Robins, and put up a 4.43 ERA in 223.1 innings pitched in 1932, his rookie year.

Most people believe that Van Mungo's best season was 1936, when he posted a 3.35 ERA, won 18 games and struck out 238 batters.
