Utility player

In sports, a utility player is a sort of jack of all trades, one who can play several positions competently.

Sports in which the term is often used include soccer, baseball and softball. Notable utility players in baseball, capable of playing in most baseball positions include Jose Oquendo, who played every position on the field during his career, Tony Phillips, the first player to start 10 games at 5 different positions in the same season, Joe McEwing, Jose Macias, Ryan Freel, Desi Relaford, and Chone Figgins.

In softball a utility player is a player that can play every position but can also bat very well. Many coaches are looking for players like these to bat as clean-up or 5th in the lineup.

In Cricket specifically the term all rounder is more commonly used.
