[edit] This place is definately picking up

Looks like I picked a good time to come back. If we can just tone down the power struggle this thing has the looks of really going places. The quality of content has gone up 1000% otherwise. Even your articles are pretty good now.

[edit] Welcome!

Welcome to the site! You may be interested in adding fan boxes or a blog-like Opinion Clubhouse to your user page. Also, be sure to give your profile an icon/avatar. In any event, let me know if I can assist you with anything. -- DNL (contact me)

[edit] Editing

I gather you need help with editing on the wiki? I'm here to help you if you need specific help, but there is a general overview in the top-right corner of the screen (i.e. where it says help, logically enough), and that should help you with the editing, and the wiki code etc. Is there anything you specifically needed help with? [edit] BP2007

Nice! I got mine last week, I've been sporadically flipping through it between studying for, like, 5 tests. It's their biggest one yet, I think because they switched publishers. Because of the switch, they accidentally left out four players from the book, but you can get their profiles/comments for free at the link above. - Davis21wylie 12:35, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

Oh, and nice previews, BTW. - Davis21wylie 12:35, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Yeah

Can't be right all the time. And he was having a great spring. Optioned to AAA and he said nah, just let me go. Would have been nice to have '05 Hermanson to solidify the bullpen. And it helps that he was born in my hometown, I've always been a fan of him.

Reds still winning the division, Cardinals will be a half game back after tonight by the way this is going Tartan

[edit] Challenge

I know your reasoning behind the Dukes challenge, but someone is either getting hurt (Baldelli) or traded (Baldelli) and Dukes isn't doing either. The Monster is up for good! The only guy who could push him out is Upton (but then, who plays second?) I like it, it's a quality challenge, and I got no problem saying you're the Armchair's Second most distinguished Insider guy -after me, of course =D that guy

[edit] Dukes

a little more insight... I think he's up for good and Cantu (nice knowing ye), Gomes and/or Baldelli will be traded for some kind of arm(s)... 5 outfielders for 3 positions and a DH means everyone gets rest, at least - or depth in case of injury.

If they ever send Dukes down, WHO comes up? JP Howell? Puh-leaze... All the young talent is already there in the bigs (Jeff Niemann isn't ready)... We Will See

[edit] Avatars

They're also called "profile images" -- see Profile Image. It's the little picture next to people's names in comments. --DNL 00:29, 10 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Projections

You're talking about baseball, right? (I also do projections for NBA basketball, is why I ask.)

This is what I've done the past two seasons: For baseball, I basically take every bit of projection information I can find from all kinds of sources (FanGraphs has a bunch, also Ron Shandler, similar players at B-R.com, Brock2 projections, etc.) and compile them into one database, then come up with one master projection set. Better projection systems (Shandler, Bill James, ZiPS) are weighted more heavily, although I can't remember what the exact weights are (it's on my laptop, which is not with me at the moment). Anyway, it's basically a wisdom-of-crowds type of deal, good for getting general trends, but maybe not so good for identifying breakouts, etc. I used the projections to find equivalent runs for hitters, and runs allowed for pitchers, both of which would be the basis for my team projections.

So, for my MLB preview, I did that for every player on a roster as of late January/early February, and parceled out playing time according to CBS Sportsline's depth charts. Every team had to add up to 4326 batting and pitching outs (average of all 2006 MLB teams); NL pitchers committed 303 outs per team at the NL avg. performance level. Where a team was short, I attributed the remaining outs to "rookies/replacements", who performed exactly at the replacement level for their league in 2006. Once every team had equal playing time, I added up runs scored/allowed for each team, and runs scored totals are always higher than runs allowed, so I split the difference between the two for the league total, then found what factor by which I had to reduce RS/increase RA at the individual level to make the total league RS/RA equal each other. From there, I used the pythagorean formula to determine team wins, and voila! Projections!

That was incredibly long-winded, but I hope you get the idea. Frankly, I probably couldn't replicate what I did myself, and it was way too much work, so I probably won't do it next season, but it was kind of rewarding. Good luck with your projections -- probably a simple scheme like weighting last year 50%, 2 years ago 33%, and 3 years ago 17% (with maybe some generic aging pattern thrown in as well) would do just as well. After all, past performance is the best predictor of future performance, especially for veterans. And MLEs could get you reasonably good data for kids coming out of the minors, even. My approach was much more complicated, but it probably didn't yield any better results. - Davis21wylie 23:22, 3 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] ArmchairGM 100

Can you write up some people? The 2007 ArmchairGM 100/Outsiders would be ideal... no way I can get to 100 myself by tomorrow --DNL 21:28, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Hanley Ramirez

Yeah, never trust me. :) Thanks, KD. --Tylersalt

[edit] Team USA

Alex Rios is Puerto Rican! Now I know that technically that's a US state, but since they are a different country internationally, they'd probably not let Rios play for him. Quickly, go vote for another one! Alex Holowczak 16:52, 12 May 2007 (UTC)

Oh right, fair enough then. It had a Puerto Rican flag on wikipedia. Never mind though. I don't suppose it'll matter. Alex Holowczak 19:11, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Your Questions

  1. Try 1969 Baltimore Orioles. We do need a better way to find info, tho... any ideas?
  2. I bookmark the page w/the red links.
  3. Ask Rob where it went, but in general, the format is going to be Year Team, e.g. 1982 Montreal Expos or 1914 Cincinnati Reds.
  4. The "history" link on the right of every page logs all edits and credits the authors.

Hope that helps! --DNL 13:51, 18 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Colors

Hey, I saw your message on Dan's talk page... Here are a few sites I use for color codes: [1], [2], and this one that has sliders. When making fanboxes, I always grab the biggest team logos I can find at this site, then try to match up the color schemes side-by-side with one of those color code sites. - Davis21wylie 21:06, 30 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] DiceK

I was just messing with you, man! I was/am guilty of sending him to Cooperstown before the season, and we had some fun arguments where you practically said he wasn't fit for AAA, so I figured it would be funny coming from me. Obviously, his real ability lies somewhere in between -- he just needs to get some consistency going, and he'll be fine. Anyway, sorry if you were offended! - Davis21wylie

[edit] Twins

Ugh... sorry that happened :( I think you must have gotten logged-out or something. That "type the word" thing happens when a logged-out user puts in a link to another site. It's there to prevent spam, because there are lots of automated tools that add links to porn sites. Maybe write them up in Word and copy/paste? That's what I tend to do. --DNL 11:16, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Sports Moments

I was hoping you could help with this project: Greatest Sports Moments Project. --Letsgojets 18:02, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Lancaster

Ha, grew up there and go back a few times a year (its where the family is). I'd say we used to get maybe 3 or 4 storms a winter and maybe a few sprinkles throughout. Otherwise, not nearly as cold as just about anything further north (kind of a best of both worlds place)...good location to visit DC, Baltimore (great town really), Philly, Pittsburgh, NYC and Boston is even striking distance. Lancaster (and York, apparently this year) have new independent minor league baseball teams with lancaster winning the championship last year. If you'd like to know more or are taking a trip let me know.

[edit] Wow

Man, that site is incredible! Not only does it have NHL data, but check out all the minor league stats it has. Great find, KD! - Davis21wylie 18:51, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Thank You

Your support was greatly appreciated. It will not be forgotten. Thank you. - Tyrone Briggs.

[edit] Brock2

No, it's actually totally free! :) After much Googling, I found an Excel spreadsheet here, which has all the basic stats. I've tweaked the spreadsheet a lot to get the projections you see on Ichiro's page (I added SB/CS just the other day)... I can send you that version, too -- just let me know. I'd love to see your Tony C. projection once you get it done; he deserved a lot better than 166 career HR. Other fun ones you can do are pre-roids Barry Bonds and pre-Cincy Griffey. Have fun! - Davis21wylie 01:38, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

Hey, I just sent you another link that should work better. I would have sent it as an e-mail attachment, but Yahoo won't let you send files that are bigger than a certain size (and it's not even that big a file, really). Anyway, I think you'll like this version better -- it's a lot less confusing, and it has stolen bases, etc. Happy projecting! - Davis21wylie 17:44, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
1. That second sheet is something I mistakenly left in there from when I was formulating the stolen base/caught stealing career patterns, so you can just ignore that, it's not important.
2. I've set it up so that the only places where you have to enter numbers are the career stats on the left, and the two green boxes: one where you enter the runs per game from the most recent league-year the player has stats from, and one where you indicate the player's main position (scorecard style -- 2=catcher, 3=1B, etc.) in his most recent year.
3. No defense, but I'm sure it could be tacked on someday. Maybe not by me, but by somebody. :)

[edit] Recruits

Two things that may have prevented it:

  1. We only started keeping track about 3 weeks ago, because we needed a tracking system :) He signed up well before then. A lot of people "missed out" on points that way -- I know I did :) -- but going forward:
  2. The recruit has to sign up via a special URL, which is sent to the new user when the old one uses the "+ Add Friends" button and other email importers. There are two ways to send the email -- by importing an address book or by using this form. (You can get the custom URL off the form, too. Just copy the email's text into Word or something like that, and you'll see it -- it's the long string that ends with "Kelsdad".)

[edit] After Further Review

What?

5.09(g) "If a third strike (not a foul tip) passes the catcher and hits an umpire, the ball is in play. If such ball rebounds and is caught by a fielder before it touches the ground, the batsman is not out on such a catch, but the ball remains in play and the batsman may be retired at first base, or touched with the ball for the out."

That's exactly what happened! There was no foul tip, I didn't catch the ball, it rolled to me and the ball didn't lodge in the unpire's mask... I picked it up and walked to the batter (who never left the batter's box) and tagged him out. --E-- 17:57, 28 July 2007 (UTC) I appreciate your thoroughness!
