User Obituary: Sox 07 World Series Champs
10/3/07 - 10/4/07
He came out of nowhere. Like most AGM users, he simply showed up. His username was odd. Not only was it describing an event that had not happened, but it was also an event that could only happen once, if at all. It’s almost as if he knew he wouldn’t be around for long.
He announced his presence on the Boston Red Sox Fan Network. These were his first words on AGM:
“why are they even playing the games? just give us the title“
His arrogance and sense of entitlement was followed up 2 minutes later by a comment on an article about the Red Sox winning game 1 of their LDS series.
“its 10 games thats is going to waste everyone's time. I can't even fathom a Red Sox + Patriots championship in the same season. It is going to be freaking AWESOME.”
His cockiness and forgetfulness of recent history (2004 when the Red Sox and Patriots were champions) drew his first thumbs down. It came from me, and it would not be the last he would earn.
The next day, he’d give us his first article. He made three basic points:
1. No city has ever had two championship teams at once (false)
2. No NFL team has ever gone undefeated (false)
3. Brady and Moss were going to set “the record”
The article would incite 150 comments. Some comments pointed out the article’s errors. Some theorized about what “the record” was. There was even a nice little verbal skirmish between Manny Stiles and myself regarding Boston fans, generalizations, ramming, and coping with bunched panties.
In what seems to be his last act, Sox 07 gave us the Comment of the Day:
“bye”
But who was he (or she)? His bio claims he was from Boston, Massachusetts, and he went to BC. But you need at least 2/3 of a brain to go to BC. So I think it’s obvious that his profile is a fake, at least in that aspect.
Tylersalt had a theory that he was Manny Stiles disguised as a stupid Red Sox fan. Certainly this would fit into Manny’s “creative” way of doing things on AGM. But Manny does have some scruples, and probably would not create a second username in order to make Boston fans look stupid. Manny would also probably say something along the lines of “Boston fans don’t need any help from me to look stupid.” Manny's also very direct about offering his opinions, and usually likes to take as much credit as he can for anything.
My theory is that Sox 07 was actually an incarnation of Fakegeorge whose shtick was writing articles and comments as a caricature of George Steinbrenner. Certainly, Fakegeorge had a penchant for being over the top, and for saying occasionally stupid things. He’s also been inactive for about two weeks now.
Whoever Sox 07 was, he made an impression on all of us at AGM. He will be missed, not for any intelligent statements or opinions, but for the firestorm he started in his one day here. Who among us have had their first article get 17 votes AND had a comment score of -21 AND had the Comment of the Day?
Actually, he won't be missed.
Rest in peace, Sox 07 World Series Champs, please.
