Favorite Moment During the 1991 football season, the East Carolina Pirates were a mere 7 points from perfection. They lost the opener at Illinois by a single score due to a questionable call. The Pirates followed that up with eleven straight victories, including wins over Syracuse, Pittsburgh, and Virginia Tech. The season culminated with an intrastate battle of Top 25 programs as ECU overcame a 17-point fourth quarter deficit to defeat the NC State Wolfpack, 37-34, in the last Peach Bowl to ever be played in Atlanta Fulton County Stadium. It was also the fastest sell-out in Peach Bowl history. The Pirates concluded the season with an 11-1 record, ranked #9 in both major polls.
Worst Moment Finding out that South Florida had been invited to join the Big East prior to the start of the 2005 season. USF's football program was born less than decade prior (1997) and had only been playing at the FBS (I-A) level since 2001. Furthermore, their basketball program was laughable at best, their baseball program was mediocre at best, they had no football stadium of their own, their attendance in all sports was in the bottom third of I-A level programs, they had never been to a bowl game, and had only made 2 appearances ever in the NCAA basketball tournament (1992 being the last). Their major qualifications for an invite to the Big East? They reside in major metropolitan area in Florida, found favor with Tampa resident, George Steinbrenner, and had a former student named Hulk Hogan. Putting USF in the Big East was the equivalent of giving a kid a Mercedes Benz on their 16th birthday.
Favorite Athletes David Garrard, starting quarterback for the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars and a former Pirate of ECU. I have had the pleasure of meeting David on several occasions, both as a student and as a professional football player. He is a very humble, intelligent, gracious, hard-working, and friendly individual. I am proud to have him as a fellow alumnus.
Least Favorite Athletes Barry Bonds. It started back in the early 1990's when he was playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates. At first, I disliked him because he was the best player on the team giving the Braves the biggest fit. That continued when he left for San Francisco. Over time, I began to appreciate just how coarse and abrasive he was, so I disliked him more. Then, he began to disgrace the sanctity of Major League Baseball records as he was obviously using banned performance enhancement drugs. As a rule of thumb, I don't like anything from Philadelphia. However, I truly appreciated the sign Phillies fans held up when Bonds passed Babe Ruth in the all-time home run standings. "Ruth did it on hot dogs & beer!"
