[edit]  !COMING SOON!

Image:BEARS1.jpg [1]
The Chicago Bears have won a total of nine NFL championships: in 1921, 1932, 1933, 1940, 194, 1943, 1946, 1963, and 1986. (The first two were won while the Bears were still known as the Staleys.) A total of twenty-eight Chicago Bears players have made it to the Pro Football Hall of Fame....The Bears played their first 50 seasons at Wrigley Field (or "Cubs Park," as it was initially known). Soldier Field opened on October 9, 1924 as a memorial to the soldiers who fought in WWI.

[edit] My Piece: "The Glory Days at Old Soldier"

Give me my Old Stadiums Back! ...........

Stadium History: In September 2003, the new and improved Soldier Field kicked off. The Chicago Bears began requesting a new stadium in the late 1990's when other modern state of the art stadiums were being built in other cities. The Bears had a rich tradition of playing football at Soldier Field, the NFL's oldest stadium. Several options on where a new stadium should be built were discussed, but the Bears decided to move nowhere. The Bears decided to build a new stadium on the same site of their current home, Soldier Field. Because of its historical presence in Chicago, the Bears decided to leave the historic colonnades for which Soldier Field is best known. The rest of the stadium would be completely demolished and a new stadium would be built inside the exterior shell.

In order for a new stadium to be built, the Bears had to play the 2002 NFL season at Memorial Stadium in Champaign, IL. At the conclusion of the 2001 season, demolition and construction on the new stadium began. The Bears new stadium continues to carry the name Soldier Field. The stadium has around 66,000 blue seats in several tiers, improved seating, better sightlines, an enlarged concourse, two 96-foot-by-23-foot video-boards, 8,000 club seats, and 133 luxury suites. To preserve Soldier Field, the classic colonnades remain intact as a lasting monument to Soldier Field's glorious past, and a 250-foot granite-wall sculpture still serves as a memorial to the men and women who served in the armed forces. Fans also are able to walk among the colonnades and the horseshoe promenade. The Chicago Bears played their first game at Soldier Field II on September 29, 2003.

So the question remains to be asked upon. Do we actually miss the glory days at the historic stadiums? With more and more teams building new stadiums in different cities around the country, it seems to me sometimes younger fans forget or never knew what it was like to walk out of the hall into the stadium and see what made this sport a sport. From baseball to basketball and football, we have seen them destroyed, made over and forgotten about. With all the technology in ballparks today it’s great, don’t get me wrong; but it is just not the same. New ballparks and stadiums are turning into amusement parks. There’s so much to do not to mention trying to catch a couple of innings of the ballgame.

As I continue writing this article I am going to be interviewing individuals from two of my favorite sports stadiums; Busch Stadium and Soldier Field. I know a few friends that have been going to game here before I was born, for that matter before my dad was born. I want to learn what it was truly like before the commercialized hype of the “man” and his attempt to give our sports the Midas touch make over.

Check here to take a virtual tour of Soldier Fields Historical trip thru change. [2]

[edit] Save The Chief

[edit] The Chief

A symbol of honor and tradition at the University of Illinois, Chief Illiniwek came into being through the creativity of Ray Dvorak , Assistant Director of Bands, and Lester Leutwiler, a student with a keen interest in Native American History. In 1926, Leutwiler and fellow Eagle Scout Ralph Hubbard combined their knowledge of Indian lore and created "The Chief." On October 30, 1926, Chief Illiniwek made his first appearance at Memorial Stadium. He thrilled the crowd during half-time of the football game with his authentic Indian dance. The Chief was an instant success and his performances became a regular event. Over the years, the Chief has provided students and alumni with a sense of belonging and an overwhelming feeling of pride for the University and the ability to call themselves "Illini." Most are still proud to honor the tradition that is the Chief.

[edit] His History

The term "Illiniwek" was first used by football coach Bob Zuppke. He was fascinated by Illini culture and liked that the term "Illiniwek" referred to the complete human being: body, intellect, and spirit. Shortly after, the University adopted the name Illiniwek for its mascot. In 1929, it was decided that a proper war suit be made for the Chief. The colorful regalia of the Sioux was chosen and an old Indian woman was called in to sew it. The costume changed four or five times over the years and in September of 1982, the present regalia was given to the University. The current costume was sewed by the wife of Frank Fools Crow, the elderly chief of the Ogala Sioux tribe of South Dakota. Fools Crow presented the costume to the university at half-time of a football game. The costume has remained intact except for the original eagle feathers in the headdress, which were returned to the Ogala tribe and replaced with turkey feathers died to appear as eagle feathers.

[edit] I'm From Chicago and I Like it that Way!!

[edit] You Know You're From Chicago When...

You say "Wanna go with?" when you mean "Do you want to come with me?"

You know what Kennedy, Dan Ryan, Eisenhower, Edens, and Bishop Ford, have in common and curse one of them daily.

You know what "the Hillside strangler is."

You can name three or four extra taxes nobody else pays.

You know the difference between Richard J Daley and Richard M Daley.

You can use two or three Daleyisms in context.

You can imitate the Mayor's whine.

You say Chicawgo and not Chicaago.

You think going to a Bears game in single digit temperatures with a wind off the lake (and freezing rain) is fun.

Da is a proper definite article.

You know what the phone number is to Empire Carpet!

You are STILL a Bulls fan........

You think kicking it outside of White Castles parking lot, (79th and Stony Island) is the "Freak Nik"

You have ever waited in line at Home of the Hoagy on 111th for 30-45 minutes for a steak samich wit cheese

You drink at bars called "Bud on Tap" or "Milwaukee's Best" -- no names, just beer signs out front.

It's January and you see someone's kitchen chair in the street, and you know that if you're a responsible citizen and bring it back to the sidewalk you will be shot on sight

You live two miles from work and it takes you two hours to drive there

You know Lincoln Towing is Satan incarnate.

You've taken the Red Line from Cubs game to Sox game.

You've cursed at a cyclist, pedestrian, or in-line skater on the lakefront path.

You wonder if the fries will taste the same at Sammy Sosa's Restaurant.

You actually get these jokes and pass them on to other friends from Chicago.
