United left it late at Goodison Park to dash the hopes of the Everton faithful. It looked like the match was headed for nil-nil draw when Nani, who was brought on in the first half for an injured Mikel Silvestre, whipped in a corner that Nemanja Vidic met with his head. The centre back put the ball past the stranded keeper with a brilliant dash to the near post. It was in the 84 th minute and it was United’s first attempt on target.
In all it was an uneventful match: Scholes was yellow-carded in the first half for throwing the ball away after he was judged guilty of a handling the ball. He then made a rash challenge on Arteta almost begging Wiley to send him off. The ref had a word with the Ginger Magician and allowed him to continue. Ronaldo was booked in the second half for diving just outside the penalty box--naughty, naughty. Ferdinand had to come to the rescue with a last-ditch challenge on McFadden when it appeared the United goal was gaping in the 89th minute. But they held for a hard-fought if not totally deserved victory.
For United to successfully defend their title it is important that they win. It doesn’t matter if it’s ugly or majestic, just as long as it’s a win.
3 points to the Red half of Manchester!
