United States Loses to Czech Republic in World Cup

The Czech Republic has defeated the United States 3-0 in the United States first game in the 2006 World Cup. With the defeat of the United States, the Czech Republic secured their first victory since 1990, when they defeated the United States 5-1 to reach the quarterfinals.

As a result of the victory, the Czech Republic is positioned well to win the group it shares with the United States, Italy, and Ghana. This will allow them to avoid front-runner Brazil in the second round of the tournament.

Unlike the Czech Republic, the United States will most likely fail to advance. They will face Italy next, one of the tournament favorites.

Jay Marrioti of the Chicago Sun Times had a great point about this. The US had a big chance to make soccer a decent support in the US and the flubbed it. They had all the hype and the names. Everyone was excited and they got crushed. This does not bode well for USA Soccer. I know they still have a shot, but this is not good.

I wholeheartedly disagree with the way Mariotti is talking. The fact that we ARE talking about this result as a massive failure, when you consider the history of American soccer, is proof that there we've come such a long way. If this result happened in 1994, no big deal. 1998, small deal. 2002, still a small deal. 2006, a failure of epic proportions.
