Undercover Sheets

by user Fangini

Ben Sheets is viewed by the masses in the fantasy world as the injury prone Mark Prior type who cannot be counted on to be the ace of your fantasy staff. While his injuries have certainly been heartbreaking to Ben's owners over the last few years it is certainly a good idea to see how his health will hold up during this years spring training. When healthy Ben has an array of pitching skills that are matched only by Johan Santana. However, even Johan cannot match the command that Ben has over the strike zone. In over 100 IP last year Ben managed a mere 11 walks folks. Thats right. As i mention on www.fangini.com ,the only thing between Ben and Mr. Cy Young are the initials D.L. Heres hoping to a healthy Ben anchoring many fantasy teams to victory.

wait, your comparing Ben Sheets to Johan Santana? Thats like comparing Marques Colston to Marvin Harrison. It's practically insulting

ummm... One is practically unknown, and the other is regarded as the best pitcher in the league and has 2 Cy Young Awards(Should be three, but that's not the issue at hand);

The only thing Sheets has to prove is his durability; his stuff is right up there with anybody's (even Santana's -- Sheets' career K/BB ratio is actually higher than Johan's). Of course, you could say that about Prior/Wood, too, but I don't think Sheets has reached that level of injury proneness... yet.

Sheets has the best k/bb ratio in major league baseball and is comparable to Johan but for the fact that he cannot stay healhty. If you look at his numners from his last full season you will see that Sheets is certainly on the same level as Johan barring injury.

Santana also had the luxury of pitching in the bullpen for a few years.

he pitched in the bullpen for part of a year. Besides, Santana pitches in the American league, against such oppenents like the BoSox, Yankees, ChiSox, Angels, and Athletics. Sheets pitches against teams like the Astros, Cardinals, Mets, Dodgers, and Nationals

Actually it was parts of his first four years. You are correct that Santana pitches in a tougher league.

Whoops, I forgot to say that those are their Translated Stats. So, those stats put Sheets and Santana on a level playing field. It isn't their actual stats.

I have a dozen or so former major leaguers on mine, but you won't catch me name dropping. Now if either Davis or Manny was on my speed dial, I'd reconsider.
