It was a horrifying experience watching last night's Twins game at U.S Cellular Field in Chicago, as we saw Julio DePaula, and the Minnesota Twins blow a six run lead in the bottom of the ninth inning, and lose the game in thirteen innings 11-10.
Last night's game was so close and exciting right up to the top of the ninth inning, with the game tied 4-4. The Minnesota Twins were coming to bat, and managed to score six runs in the top of the ninth inning, with the help of a three run home run from Rondell White, to lead the game 10-4, entering the bottom of the same inning.
There was no way to fault the Twins offense last night, as they put up 10 runs, on 20 hits, en route to their 11-10 loss. Last night's game was at the fault of Julio DePaula, who took a seemingly safe six run lead in the bottom of the ninth inning, only to give up five runs, on five straight hits, and Joe Nathan, who recorded his fourth blown save of the season, and second in a week.
DePaula, a young arm in the Twins bullpen was called up from Triple-A Rochester August 23, and has pitched ten innings since then. This was by far DePaula's worst outing since May 21, when the Texas Rangers took batting practice against him, scoring six runs in one inning. However, that was only DePaula's second Major League game of his career. Last night's game topped the Texas game, as DePaula was unable to retire any White Sox batters, and they teed off on him scoring five runs, on five straight hits in the bottom of the ninth inning.
With the Twins struggling like they have been lately, they did not need a performance like that from their bull pen. Especially with Carlos Silva pitching so well. Carlos, who has been plagued with a lack of run support this season, left the game after pitching six innings, and allowing three runs, on eight hits, striking out two and walking none. Carlos left the game after six innings, and a 4-3 lead. Carlos then saw his lead given up by Matt Guerrier, who recorded his third blown save of the season, when he coughed up a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to Alex Cintron. The home run was Cintron's second of the season.
The Twins saw the game slip away for good, in the bottom of the 13th inning, when former Twin A.J. Pierzynski hit a single to left fielder Jason Tyner. Pierzynski's single scored Luis Terrero, and the winning run.
Juan Rincon was tagged with the loss in this game for the Twins, while Heath Phillips got the win for Chicago.
The Twins and White Sox will play game two this afternoon, in a 2:55 pm start on ESPN. Matt Garza will get the call for the Twins, while Jose Contreras goes for the White Sox.Hopefully our Twins will fare a little better in today's game. In Garza's only career start against the White Sox, is not scored upon, and only allowed five hits, while striking out six batters, and walking three. Garza will be looking for the same success today.
GO TWINS!!!!
