Because I don't think I want to be a waterboy!
Anyway, this coming Saturday, I will get to meet Ken Follett, who is the greatest writer on earth. For those of you who never heard of him, he wrote "Eye of the Needle," "On Wings of Eagles" (a thrilling account of Ross Perot's successful attempt to get two of his employees rescued from Iran captivity), and "Pillars of the Earth."
One question I might ask him is whether he would consider writing a sports oriented book, the way Bernard Malamud wrote "The Natural." It would be the greatest sports book ever! One of Ken Follett's best books is "The Man from St. Petersburg" which is about a tragic romantic tattered web set against a Russian and British treaty on the eve of World War I (and just before the Bolshevik revolution). So maybe he could do something really cool with the "Miracle on Ice," showing how the spectacular Soviet defeat was a precursor to the fall of Russian Communism just nine years later.
Or, if he wrote one about the 1969 Mets, he'd start by showing how Tommie Agee and Cleon Jones ancestors were freed from a southern Alabama plantation 100 years earlier. Or he'd show Jerry Koosman as a Minnesota farm boy throwing pitches to his best friend between milking cows.
Yes, I know it's not your typical wiki sports article but I hope you enjoyed it!
