US Women's Soccer Team: Best in the World According to ESPN Commentator

Before the US Women's National Team destroyed a powderpuff team in New Zealand, some ESPN commentator said that the US has the best squad in the world. What the heck ever happened to being humble? Instead of saying the US have a great squad and that they should be a dangerous team in next month's World Cup, you come up with best in the world. Look, the US has one 2 out of 4 Women's World Cups for one thing, and two, why is it a big thing that the US is best in the world for Women's Soccer? There are two problems with that statement.....

1. It's Women's Soccer. Not a lot of people pay attention to that.
2. Maybe 30-40 countries actually care about Women's Soccer. Honestly, the Men's side has 200+ countries putting emphasis on the Men's side, while 30-40 put more emphasis on the Women's side.

So I say to you, we have to stop labelling ourselves best in the world, when 80% of the time it's not even true.

Womens' sports are underrated sometimes, only because I think guys would like to watch guy sports more than girls' sports. That's just what I think. There are actually some good female athletes in this world. Anyone heard of Mia Hemm? Jenny Finch? Maria Sharipova? Lisa Leslie? Serena Williams? All of these women (except for Sharipova and probably Finch cuz they are better looking) don't get as much recognition as they should because guys prefer to watch sports that don't have a W in their acronymns.

Do you really watch the WNBA? The games are attrocious. I wrote a 12 page paper for my sports marketing class on the WNBA and I wanted to kill myself after writing it.

the fact that there is a dearth of countries playing womens soccer doesn't mean someone can't be the best, it just means that calling yourself that isn't saying alot. the US team has been the best team as fas as i know. in regards to women's soccer in general as a fan of both basketball and soccer I'd say women's soccer is more interesting than women's basketball. (not that it's saying much)

The US women's team has been very successful. I think the US should be proud of their achievements, but as SS said it is all about perspective. The fact is that the US supports people/teams that are successful and forget about ones that are not. I will qualify this by saying that smaller teams in less populated parts of the country will strongly support their local teams, but if they are not winners they will not register in the national psyche. Maybe they should stick a couple of the Ladies on the Mens team to see if that helps spur on some interest!
