US Open Cup Fever: Catch It!

by user Djwalker

The 92nd edition of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup heated up this week, with mucho matches, including a compelling match between my very own FC Dallas and USL upstarts, Charleston Battery. The Hoops had to go two overtimes and penalty kicks to disconnect the Battery (get it? HA!). As usual there wasn't much going on in terms of televised matches, but the Battery offered a one-off PPV webcast for only five bucks. Check it out at charlestonbattery.com, where the replay is available for the same price.

It’s actually a little humiliating for the FC Dallas franchise that a 2nd division team is outdoing them in Cup coverage.

If you’re not hip to the whole Open Cup concept, there’s a good overview at Wikipedia, and a really good thread over at BigSoccer about favorite USOC memories (the original post was written by one of the great men in American Soccer, Peter Wilt).

It bugs me every year that this great old tournament doesn’t get the coverage it deserves. However it seems things are slowly but surely getting better. Fox Soccer Channel has signed on to show the final and press coverage is growing. My hope is that in my lifetime it will be an important American sporting event on par with the U.S. Open (tennis and golf versions).

Get on board and bug your local team as well as your local media outlets to get on board as well.

It's good US Football has a Cup competition like the rest of the world. Do the MLS teams get to enter? Also, may I direct you towards ny article on the correct lingo in football. It's "extra-time" not "two overtimes".

Alex, your fighting an uphill battle! We're talking soccer hear, based in US. US fans refer to it as overtime and will again and again and again.

Fair enough. As long as I can point out "you're" and "here" as errors in your last comment, I will calmly let it pass me by... :)

Yeah, MLS teams enter (like Premiership teams in the FA Cup, after a few stages have progressed). They've won all but one title since 1996, when an A-League (now the USL) Rochester Rhinos beat the Colorado Rapids in the 1999 final.

I prefer extra-time as well, but like Sayhey said, American fans are used to certain terminology, so sometimes I choose not to rock the boat. Thanks for your comments, gentlemen.

This year was great, in that FC Roma, and amateur side from Dallas, made it to the 4th round, beating two professional teams along the way (Miami FC of the USL, which has Brazil legend Romario on their roster; CD Chivas USA of MLS). They went down to Los Angeles Galaxy 2-0. Terrific run for those boys, though. Their coach funded the Cup Run by maxing out his credit cards. Fortunately, they get $10,000 for being the lowest-division side to advance the farthest (furthest?) in the tournament.

Same thing is true in the FA Cup. That is precisely why that sort of Cup competition is great, in the early stages, some games have great stories attached to them.

I enjoyed watching Doncaster Rovers make their run in the League Cup last year. Plus they have the same Red & White hoops as FC Dallas.

Unfortunately, the League Cup is a minority Cup that only has importance if, say Man U don't win anything else. That way they can boast "Another successful season, we won a trophy." Still a great achievement despite the weakness of the better teams.

Thanks for the link to the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup Wiki page. I'm just starting my experiment with soccer fandom and am confused about this Cup thing occuring during the season. Since 1914, eh? Interesting.
