USC Trojans Football 2003-2005

Haven't the last 3 years been sweet, except the last game, thanks Vince Young. Second worst day of my life. Just wanted to remember the past years. Fight On!

The way people talk about this team, it's as if they're forgetting that they were technically just the second best team two of those years. In 2003, they were joint champions with LSU, but LSU was the team that had to play mighty Oklahoma in the championship. In 2005, Texas won the championship, but somehow the only team people talk about is USC. I'm not trying to take away from what they accomplished just that the run is overhyped.

No way is it overhyped. They won like 34 games in row, which is pretty incredible and they destroyed Iowa in a BCS game when they should have been playing for the BCS title game. There is no way it's been overhyped, even if they weren't the champions all three years, you could argue that the four year run they're on, is as good of a run as any team has had since?????

I'm not trying to take away from the longevity of it, as the streak was definitely amazing. However they only truly won ONE national championship. It's just that people seem to forget that they weren't the best team every year. There were teams better than USC along the way.

I agree Bobbyjim. Not taking anything away from them, but they didn't win the championship in 2003. The AP voters up and deciding they're the national champion despite playing in a bowl game against a clearly weaker team is not the same thing as winning a championship. They may as well have done the same thing for Auburn in 2004, and it would have been equally absurd.

Yeah, you can't vote on who is national champion. That's why they play games.

Um, hello? The idiotic BCS system put Oklahoma in the title game, and USC never had a chance to win it on the field. "Deciding they're the national champion despite playing in a bowl game against a clearly weaker team" -- gee, that sounds a lot like LSU that year...

At the time, everyone was complaining about LSU being in the game. Oklahoma and USC were thought to be the super powers all year, so when LSU won, the AP voters didn't know what to do with themselves. Although I do agree USC probably should've been in that game, they weren't and LSU became national champions, not USC.

They were both National Champions. Which is a ludicrous concept in and of itself: can you imagine the Steelers and Seahawks being named co-NFL champions and not playing the Super Bowl? Only in college football!

But that's the argument. USC was NOT national champion. They were voted to be the top team at the end of the year, but LSU won the national championship game. On the field, LSU was the champ.

I do agree that the whole thing is absolutely ridiculous though.

Again, that argument could be made for Auburn in 2004. But I don't think that delegitimizes USC's championship. So, why should that delegitimize LSU's championship in 2003? I really don't think I'm being biased here, just reasonable. Being voted the national champion by a bunch of writers and winning the national championship aren't the same thing. You dis the BCS, but I could say that if it weren't for the idiotic sports writers involved with the AP poll, that USC wouldn't have anything to talk about with 2003. I think it goes both ways. You can't call the BCS idiotic when it serves your purposes.

Oh, you think I'm an SC fan? I wanted Texas to win last January! What I am a fan of is no more split titles. No more computer formulas screwing teams. No more voters screwing teams. You want to know what I'm a fan of? I'm a fan of playoffs. Let's decide it on the field, legitimately, and eschew the idiotic BCS.

I agree that a playoff is the only fair way, but saying you are against voters is arguing against your own point. It was the voters who chose USC as champions, not the actions on the field.

I never said I sided with the voters, but as it stands now it's as unfair for you guys to delegitimize USC's 2003 co-title as it is for me to delegitimize LSU's stake, because we don't know which team was better, and each has a legit claim to the crown. All I've been saying is that USC never got a chance to prove their case on the field, to rectify the dilemma. Sure, LSU beat Oklahoma, but that only partially means they "won it on the field" because they never had to go through USC (just like USC would only partially win it on the field in 2004 because they never proved their worth vs. Auburn). So, give me a 4-team playoff: #1 LSU vs. #4 Michigan, #2 USC vs. #3 Oklahoma, and the winners square off... Then we'd know for sure.

Did I ever say you were a USC fan? Stop putting words in my mouth. All I was saying was that it's unfair to LSU to delegitimize their national title like that. And nobody delegitimizes USC's 2004 national championship just because they didn't have to face Auburn. It's a double standard. You don't have to be a fan to have a double standard.

By the way, I don't delegitimize their 2003 co-title. What I'm saying is that in my opinion, they don't have a co-title because they didn't play in the title game. That's not the same thing as delegitimizing it. They didn't win it, they were given it. That's not how you get a national championship.

You don't understand what I'm saying. I'm saying that I CAN'T delegitmize their title of 2003, because they don't have one as far as I'm concerned. I'm not putting a caveat on it and saying "it's not legitimate because they didn't play the best team," as y'all are trying to do about LSU. I'm saying that they don't have a national title. Period. Being VOTED the national champion in the age of the BCS is not the same as winning the national championship. Now I'd appreciate it if you'd stop minusing my comments just because you disagree with them. If you want to dispute them, fine. But you're not showing me where I'm wrong.

I'm a Notre Dame fan and that USC vs Notre Dame was classic. It was arguably the best win of the USC dynasty with that clutch throw from Leinart and a bit of luck at the end.

The run was a tad overhyped with only one undisputed title. Still its the best run since Nebraska's five year run from 1993-1997 with 2 titles, 1 spilt title, a loss in the title game, and an another 'down' year where they went 11-2.
