USA Soccer Team get their hineys handed to them

Lost 4-1 to Argentina on Thursday
Lost 4-1 to Argentina on Thursday

Okay, so it's their B-team. However, the chances are, that with the A-team, the USA Men's Soccer Team would've lost to Argentina 4-1 anyway. But honestly, this is exactly what I mean about the US not being dominant. England's B team beat the US A-team in a friendly in August 2005, so it's definitely possible for the US to do the same. What I saw was an utter disgrace, to think that could possibly be the A-team soon.

Notice that the US will beat the powderpuff teams like Guatemala, Cuba, and Haiti, and boost up the hype that they are really good. But once they face anyone in South America or Europe, they falter. The one thing they have to improve, is that they must stop playing all of their friendly matches at home! The big test is when they go to Sweden in September, to prove that they can beat the better teams outside of the USA.

The final thing that the US has to do, is stop parading around one player. Landon Donovan is not that great. Sure, he's got 34 goals, and a hat trick against Ecuador, but most of his goals come against weak teams. Once he goes to Europe, he does a faster disappearing act than Spalding Gray. Soccer is a sport, in which you can't rely on one player to carry your team. Soccer teams always have multiple stars to showcase, the US only chooses one.

I think the US will have to stop playing charades, and show the world what they are really made of.

What's the alternative? Getting it THROWN at them? I still say we could throw any given NFL team (aka a bigger, more athletic team) out there and do better on intimidation alone... maybe it's just me - but guys like LT and Reggie Bush would kick ass at soccer, even untrained and unrefined!

"untrained and unrefined" you mean like the rest of the US soccer players? :)

That was one ugly performance. B team, C team, whatever. That was just embarassing.

I agree with most of your points: too Donovan-dependent, not rigourous enough with friendlies although this fall is a start, playing Sweden, Switzerland, and Catalonia in Europe. The friendlies thing is crucial - we don't have the firepower in our continent to build up the team, so we have to look elsewhere. However, I'm not as negative about last night's game.

Question: How many other teams would have a better result against a team with Crespo, Messi, Tevez, Riquelme, Mascherano, etc.? They played well for 65 minutes against one of the world's best (in my opinion the best) national sides. At least they didn't lose to 5-0 like Columbia did to Paraguay.

The positives: Benny Feilhaber is developing well, dishing out the pass the lead to the penalty. Jonathan Bornstein kept Lionel Messi in check, which most defenders in La Liga can't do. And DeMerit is better than Gooch, period.

The problem with the game is that they didn't produce enough opportunities up front. The lack of fight-back let Argentina get those last two goals. Part of the problem is personnel. Eddie Johnson needs to learn when to turn it up, because he has natural ability (get him to Europe! He might just have a chance then!). Twellman is useless, and hopefully he won't be seeing much more international action. Pay attention to the U-20 World Cup - I will because I am curious about whether Jozy Altidore might be the player we need.

I want to point out that I think this is a wake-up call game - there is a long way to go to be an elite team. There are some things that are going in the right direction; fortunately we have two years to look more intensely at the issue. I'm not thinking it's all sunshine and rainbows right now. You would be stupid to think so.

The one thing the US can be proud of, is that they didn't totally crap the bed like Brazil did.

Last major point: Grandpa Kasey has to go! Congrats, you've passed 100 caps now go the hell away. You've never succeeded in any competitive tournament (consider the two WCs we didn't advance in you were the keeper). Now leave the NT alone.

You can't hope to do well in International events with second rate teams.
