U.S. maybe not cut out for soccer

The Foul Pole: Happy it doesn't have to write about soccer anymore

The United States is a great country and all, but when is it going to realize that it cannot play soccer. After an 8th place finish in the 2002 World Cup, the U.S. will not advance to the 2nd round of 16.

The speed of Ghana did not seem to be a problem early in the first half, but after Ghana scored a penalty kick in the late part of the first half to go up 2-1, it seemed as though the U.S. was destined to go home.

In a must win, the U.S. came out flat, again. Maybe Bruce Arena isn't the guy. Maybe some of these players aren't the answer. Or maybe, the U.S. just isn't getting any better at soccer.

Brian McBride and Landon Donovan failed to show up. Basically, the U.S. is going home and really didn't put forth the effort and consistency needed to advance.

Best of luck to Ghana and Italy. At least we don't have to write about soccer anymore.

What are you embarassed about? The US isn't good at soccer. Be embarssed when the USA basketball get sknocked around, not when soccer does.

That was a terrible penalty that set up the game winner. But the US had plenty of chances to score after that.

I'll go with that. Is there anything else we can blame Ozzie for?

I'm amazed Ghana went through from that group, the Czechs will be a bit annoyed. They looked so impressive against the USA, and didn't win another game. If the US beat Italy and stayed a man up for the rest of the game, every team would have been on 3 going in to today. Would have made for a great last day of group matches. I would have thought USA would have advanced.

As bad as this year's World Cup performance was, the 1998 one was far, far worse.

The US prefer Ghana to the Czech Republic. They let them win so the Czechs would be knocked out. And for the good of the World Cup - nice to see the first big name be knocked out...

This was the worse World Cup showing ever. In 1998 the U.S. did not have the athletes to compete at the top level. Now they have the players, but have shown no willingness to play at the level. That comes down to a question of heart. The loss to Ghana and the overall performance in the cup marked a sad day for American soccer. The only question left to ask is where do they go from here.

The point is that the U.S. has no management in soccer, got a few bad calls by the referees against Italy that screwed them, and Ghana just outplayed us, pure and simple. Hats off to them on making it to the round of 16 in their first visit to the World Cup.

In a game in which players do not complain too much about officiating and simply absorb all the contact, it comes down to heart, playing through no matter what the game throws at you. The USA simply does not have that, and it shows. Blame the players, but you probably have to blame us at fans as well. Soccer is a sport that touches the world, and if we do not support our own team, how can we expect them to play well for us?

I'll agree that we had better athletes on this US team than in 1998, but I wonder if they compare with the guys that the other countries are putting out on the field, athleticism-wise. Our best athletes seem to end up in the NFL or NBA.
