Ty Law joins the Chiefs, Re-unites with Herm Edwards

9
Vote

Is this it? Is this the piece the Kansas City Chiefs need to reach the Super Bowl? The team just bolstered their secondary in a big way if Law can disprove the doubters this season the same way that he did last season. He did that on a less-than-100% foot, so this season he should be able to provide instant impact. Paired with Patrick Surtain, and with Herm Edwards ending the neglect of the Chiefs' defense, the secondary should leave no questions about its ability.

Have fun with Law, Chiefs fans. Law led the league in pass interference calls last year and took too many risks, some of which rewarded him (10 INT) and some of which did not. I sincerely hope that he is worth whatever you paid for him, but be wary.

I think they're just looking for someone who can put forth that kind of effort, regardless of whether it results in some pass intereference calls. At least that means he's covering guys, more than can be said for what they've had the past few years.

Finally the Chiefs find a defensive player... Too bad he is past his prime.

Now the Chiefs have ONE decent defensive player. I'm quivering in my boots. *snicker* GO BRONCOS!

It's funny how quickly people dismiss the Chiefs as underachievers. They were victims of circumstance last year. They were still a good team. I believe they were just the second or third team since the NFL moved to a six team playoff format to win 10 games and miss the playoffs. They had a good team last year, and they're getting better. Maybe not enough to compete with the almighty Broncos that talk smack even after last year's AFC championship game, but they are a good team.

Exactly my thinking. You have to understand what Edwards means in this equation. His game-day coaching aside, he's a helluva coach and getting young guys ready and into the lineup. This is in stark contrast to Vermeil, who used veterans as a security blanket. Am I over-reacting to Ty Law a bit in this post. Maybe a bit, I'll concede. But we know much better what we get in him than we do in Lenny Walls *right now*. And let's be honest, this is yet another one-year contract in reality. Law should be a good complement to surtain and give us a solid secondary. Like ASwaff said, this is NOT our "only good defensive player". Jared Allen was a pleasant surprise the last couple of years. Kawika Mitchell really came into his own at MLB. Derrick Johnson could have had a better rookie year, but he should only get better. Kendrell Bell was a disappointment, but as a veteran who has done good things elsewhere he should be able to do great coming out of an "adjustment year". Sammy Knight is a solid strong safety and he's already being challenged by a rookie. With Greg Wesley, this is FAR from a laughingstock of a secondary, and defense as a whole.

And of course I didn't mean that Ty Law was a young guy, but I mean that Edward's ability at roster building is going to go along way while Law provides a good, solid immediate solution.

Ain't circumstances a bitch?! The Chiefs were 25th in total defense, 7th against the run, a daunting 30th against the pass. Circumstances are the D in KC stinks, and the Chiefs braintrust did little to address glaring weaknesses in the draft. Good luck with a circumstantially bad defense Chiefs fans, you'll need it. And just as a point of reference/information, at least the Broncos made the playoffs. If the Chiefs climb into the top 20 in overall defense I'll eat my words. Until then I'll feel secure in the fact the Chiefs D will be as seive-like as ever.

That's a little too easy of a write-off. If you want to ignore a good thing developing to keep it simple, be my guest.

Spoken like a true Broncos fan. No genuine analasys, just saying whatever you can to make your own team look good. One thing on Derrick Johnson - he'll thrive under a defensive-minded coach. As a UT fan, I got to see him play from the time he was a freshman, and he's a truly gifted athlete. I really believe that with the proper coaching and the kind of defensive calling that will bring out the best in DJ, he'll conjur memories in Kansas City of Derrick Thomas.

Um ASwaff, I provided stats and analyzed the first two picks of the Chiefs are not going to help that much, they may not even start. Herm couldn't draft in New York and he still can't draft. But Chiefs fans are somewhat notorious for sticking their collective heads in the sand.

Haha a "daunting" 30th against the pass... did you forget your Broncos were 29th! ...with Champ Bailey, the best corner in the game, no less. Might I add, your defense spent the least amount of time on the field per game. If they were, let's say 10th in time of possession... well you get the idea. Also, using the Aikman ratings (pretty much standard now for people who know what they're talking about), the Chiefs were 10th and the Broncos 17th.

Oh, and Edwards is no Marvin Lewis. That guy can coach. Edwards is OK, in a Mike Martz kinda way. Herm's record with the Jets...39-41.

How is Edwards like Mike Martz, THE worst gameday coach in NFL history?

Because he squandered a load of talent put in place by Bill Parcels and couldn't draft. In that respect he's EXACTLY like Martz.

Yes, he definitely underachieved in New York, but you also have to consider what he had to work with. Hostile media, hostile wide receievers, a QB that would charitably be compared to a thin sheet of glass...I don't know that any coach could have succeeded under the conditions Herm had in NY. And I'm not a big fan of Herman Edwards, I'm just saying you have to consider what he had to work with, and it's certainly not what he will have in KC.

So the Cheifs were the ones fooled into paying Law. You'd think after the awful year he had last year, the Cheifs would have realized he can no longer play in today's NFL... I know he had a few picks, but he led the NFL in PI penalties(as someone said already). He hurt the Jets ALOT more than he helped them last year.

But he can at least cover. Not like he used to, but the Chiefs need any help they can get on defense. Law had 10 interceptions last year. The entire Chiefs team had 16. I'd call that an upgrade, even with the penalties.

You can't say "even with the penalties". He can't cover anymore, that's the problem. He grabs and pushes way too often when he gets in trouble. With the new rules(basically named the TY Law rule) that kind of physical corner play can not be played. BTW, 3 of his 10 picks came in one meaningless game at the end of the year against Buffalo. Stil, 10 INTs don't mnean much when there's a PI penalty for each one.

You say he can't cover, but 10 pics says he can. Again, not as well as he used to, but I've seen him and I've seen the Chiefs secondary. Even an againg Law is better than what the Chiefs have.

By the way, you think the Chiefs didn't have any pointless INTs in pointless games? It averages out.
