EIGHTH IN A SERIES
The Philadelphia Phillies once again lost an extra inning game. This time, the loss game against the Colorado Rockies. The loss left the Phillies with a mark of 43-43 in the 2007 MLB season. More importantly, the loss left the Phillies are two losses away from the franchise’s 10,000 loss.
The Phillies were once up 6-1 in this game, however, the Phillies bullpen once again came up short. As usual, Jose Mesa entered the game and gave his usual performance. He pitched a single inning. He gave up a run. He left the game.
Speaking of Mesa, the Phillies should have a contest for their fans – figure out Jose Mesa’s real age. According to Joe Table, he is 41 years old. This seems accurate, until you read his bio, where it states that he has a 36 year old daughter. Now this means that either Jose was a stud in the first grade or he is much older than 41. Maybe Julio Franco isn’t the older current active ballplayer!
There are two games remaining against the Rockies before the All-Star break begins for the Phillies. Hence, the opportunity to get to 10,000 before the break is still alive and well. More than likely, the Phillies will win at least one of these two games.
If this is correct, then the Phillies will lose their 10,000 game at home next weekend. The opposition will be the defending champions, the St. Louis Cardinals. I have a ticket for the Sunday game, so I may see the loss in person.
It is truly sad that the Phillies are wasting a golden opportunity to take the NL East by storm. The New York Mets are on the brink of destruction. When Jose Reyes starts dogging it, you know there is big trouble inside that clubhouse. The Atlanta Braves are getting hit hard with injuries. Yet, the Phillies refuse to capitalize on it.
Rather than writing about the Phillies taking charge in the NL East, I get to write about them inching closer to 10,000 losses.
