Twins Notes

Congratulations:

To Scott and LeAnn Baker on the birth of their second child Easton Timothy Baker. Easton was born on Friday at 10:38 p.m. CT at Willis Knighton Piermont Hospital in Shreveport, La. He weighed in at 6 pounds, 9 ounces and joins brother Elijah, 2. Both mother and child were reported to be doing well. Scott still made his start on time Sunday afternoon against the Orioles. He has returned back to Louisanna to spend time with his wife and newborn child. Scott will return to the Twin Cities on time for his next scheduled start against Kansas City on Saturday.

Hunter Declines Contract Negociations:

Twins six-time Glode Glove Center Fielder Torii Hunter has declined recent contract negotiations, stating he wants to concentrate on reaching the post season. In a recent article Hunter stated: "I don't want to be a distraction," Hunter said. "We have a chance to win this division, and once all that stuff starts, it can be a distraction to me, my teammates, my manager [and] my coaching staff. I don't want to be the cause of all that." Hunter also refuted an article written by Ken Rosenthal stating the team offered him a 4 year $56 Million deal. Hunter's comments were: "That's wrong, way wrong," Hunter said. "And rumors like that can only distract from what we're trying to do on the field." Hopefully the Twins and Hunter can come to a contract agreement after the 2007 season concludes, before Hunter enters the free agency market.

Injuries:

Left hander Dennys Reyes is back on the 15day disabled list with inflamation in his elbow. With Reyes on the disabled list, all the left hander option will go to Carmon Cali. The twins were hoping that Glen Perkins would return in time for the September post season push, but that option looks like it wont happen. In fact, Perkins might not pitch again this season. The article states on Reyes that:

Reyes has been dealing with inflammation in his left elbow for most of the week. He injured the elbow by banging it into a chair in the bullpen at the Metrodome during the club's last homestand. Reyes tried to throw on Friday, but he still felt quite a bit of pain in the elbow and there were no guarantees as to when he might be ready to get back on the mound. The left-hander will now return to the Twin Cities to undergo an MRI on his elbow to ensure that nothing else is wrong.

Joe Mauer's injured hamstring during Saturday's game in Baltimore, has the Twins calling up catcher Chris Heintz as the Twins new back up. Mauer will travel to Cleveland with the Twins, and will hopefully be ready in the next few days. Mauers comments on the injury were:

"It's pretty frustrating," Mauer said of the injury. "I really haven't been healthy the whole year. And now, this comes at the time of the year when we are trying to make a run. I'll just keep rooting the guys on, and hopefully, I'll be back there soon to help out."

Look at Liriano: Francisco Liriano will arrive in the Twin Cities on Friday to spend the homestand with the club and get a checkup from the team doctors.

Liriano, who underwent Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery in November, has been progressing on schedule with his throwing program. If things remain on track, Liriano could be throwing off a mound as soon as November.

"It's going to be nice to see him again, and I'm sure he'll be excited to be back with everyone," Gardenhire said.

Lucky seven: Seven players from the Twins' rookie Elizabethton, Tenn., club were named to the Appalachian League All-Star team.

Outfielders Ozzie Lews and Rene Tosoni, pitcher David Bromberg, catcher Greg Yersich, first baseman Rene Leveret, third baseman Deibinson Romero and shortstop Estarlin De Los Santos all earned the honors.

Lews was also named the league's Player of the Year, batting .332 for the season, while Bromber was named the league's Pitcher of the Year, racking up an 8-0 record with a 2.72 ERA in 12 appearances (11 starts).
