[edit] Biography

Acquired

The Blue Bombers selected Westwood in the sixth round (48th overall) of the 1991 Canadian College Draft.

2005

The future Canadian Football Hall of Fame member and one of the greatest players to ever wear a Blue Bombers uniform continued his assault on the team and league record books in ‘05. He holds more than 30 known Blue Bomber records including all-time scoring (2,516), most seasons leading the team in scoring (14) and is in the CFL’s Top-10 in at least 10 regular-season categories. He holds the CFL record for the best career field goal percentage in the playoffs (85.1 per cent) and the most consecutive regular season converts (599).

Westwood dressed for all 18 of Winnipeg’s regular season games. He successfully kicked 28 of 40 field goal attempts (70.0 per cent). His longest field goal of the season was a 47-yarder. He also kicked off 82 times for 4,454 yards and one single. His longest kickoff of the season was a 94-yarder. Westwood finished fifth overall in kicker scoring in the CFL with 141 points (49 converts, 28 field goals, eight singles).

The Bombers resident wildman also filled in for ailing punter Jon Ryan in the Bombers’ season finale against Calgary. He punted five times for 199 yards for a 39.8 average.

2004

Westwood had 50 field goal attempts, 39 of which were good for a total of 1,109 yards and an average of 28.4 yards. He had 78 kickoffs for a total of 4,232 yards and one single. His longest kickoff was 95 yards. He also had one rush for eight yards against Saskatchewan Sept. 12.

On July 8 he moved into fifth place in CFL all-time kickoffs with 1,035. On July 30 versus Edmonton he surpassed the 60,000-yard barrier in kickoff yardage. Aug. 17 he became only the fifth CFL player to successfully make 600 converts. Against Edmonton on Aug. 12 he took over sole possession of fourth place in the CFL record books for all-time kickoff singles with 23.

2003

It was fitting that the man who handled two key duties for the Blue Bombers would be named the club’s first double award nominee in three years.

Westwood was the team’s Most Outstanding Canadian and Most Outstanding Special Teams Player in 2003. He led the CFL in scoring (198), game-winning field goals (two), field goals of 50 yards or longer (five) and convert percentage (100.0 per cent). He was second in field goals made (47), second in field goals attempted (61), third in net punting average (35.4) and fourth in punting average (41.6).

In 2003, he reached or surpassed 500 field goals made, 500 consecutive converts made, 1,000 kickoffs, 2,200 points scored and 15,000 field goal yards.

2002

Playing in all of Winnipeg’s 18 regular-season games along with the 2002 West Semifinal and the 2002 West Final, Westwood led the CFL in points scored (204), field goals (45), field goal attempts (62), kickoffs (93), kickoff yards (5,626), kickoff singles (4) and longest kickoff (95 yards – four times).

He placed second in converts made (57) and converts attempted (57), and 5th in kickoff average (60.5).

2001

The 2001 CFL season was one of many accomplishments and milestones for Westwood. He played in all of Winnipeg’s 18 regular-season games in 2001, along with the East Division Final and the Grey Cup.

He was first in the CFL in kickoff singles (three), converts made (54), converts attempted (54) and convert percentage (100.0 per cent). He was second in the CFL in kickoffs (79), kickoff yardage (4,804) and yards per kickoff (60.8). He finished fifth in league scoring with 159 points.

2000

The 2000 CFL season was one of the most dramatic seasons of Westwood’s career. He appeared in all 18 regular-season games plus Winnipeg’s two playoff games in 2000.

He put in extra work after the 34th Labour Day Classic against the Saskatchewan Roughriders (Winnipeg @ Saskatchewan, Sept. 3, 2000), as he was asked to take on the squad’s punting duties when regular punter Bob Cameron suffered a season-ending back injury.

1991-2000

The Big Blue originally acquired Westwood when they selected him in the 6th Round (48th Overall) of the 1991 Canadian College Draft. Westwood is the club’s top draft choice of the 1990s and one of Winnipeg’s greatest draft choices ever.

His 224 regular-season games played total is the highest for any Bomber draft choice, just ahead of Winnipeg Football Club Hall of Fame member Stan Mikawos (220 games). Westwood’s 241 total games (regular-season, playoff and Grey Cup) are the second-highest for a Winnipeg draftee behind Mikawos (248 total games).

Westwood holds the Winnipeg Football Club record for most points scored in a single season with 213, set in the 1994 season. Twice in his career, Westwood has booted mammoth 57-yard field goals – Aug. 23, 1994 against the B.C. Lions and July 29, 1996 against the Calgary Stampeders.

He led the CFL in field goals in 1992 (47) and in points in 1994 (213). His 72 converts in 1994 remain the fourth-highest single-season total in CFL History.

One of Westwood’s career highlights was scoring a 12-yard rushing touchdown on a fake field goal attempt against the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Sept. 10, 1995. On that play, holder Bob Cameron spotted the ball on the ground briefly before flipping it over his shoulder to Westwood, who scampered into the end zone.

Personal

Westwood is a dedicated community volunteer, most notably with the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Association. He has served as the honorary chairperson for the association’s Breath of Life Women’s Golf Classic – a popular fundraising event.

In 2000, Westwood was the club’s nominee for the prestigious Tom Pate Award, which is presented annually by the Canadian Football League Players’ Association to the person who makes an outstanding contribution to the team, the community and the sport.

In addition to his community service, Westwood is an accomplished musician. His CD 1492-1975, won a pair of awards at the 2005 Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards. He has also tried his hand at professional boxing and tap dancing.

Westwood, his wife Ann and their family reside in Mississauga, Ont. in the off-season.
