Trivia Answer

Late Friday evening I posted the following trivia question, and it must have been tougher than I thought because only one 'Chair member attempted a guess.

In a game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Atlanta Braves in August 1973, Doc Ellis was pitching for Pittsburgh and was experiencing control problems. After walking two hitters and going to a 2-0 count on Sonny Jackson, manager Bill Virdon pulled Ellis for Ramon Hernandez. Braves manager Eddie Mathews countered by pinch-hitting Dick Dietz for Jackson, who subsequently walked. What is the correct scoring for this play?

Doc Ellis walked Dick Dietz

Ramon Hernandez walked Dick Dietz

Doc Ellis walked Sonny Jackson

According to official scoring rules, the pitcher who delivers the first two balls of the at-bat is charged with the walk. So the scoring is, Doc Ellis walked Dick Dietz.
