Trinidad Open to De La Hoya Rematch

Felix "Tito" Trinidad, in retirement since his May 2005 shutout loss to Winky Wright has left the door open to a potential rematch with Oscar De La Hoya.  Trinidad (42-2) stated in an interview with Primera Hora that while he is enjoying his retirement he would be willing to grant a rematch to the Golden Boy whom he narrowly defeated by majority decision in 1999.  Many boxing observers felt the decision should've gone the other way.

"De La Hoya knows I can't go any lower than 160 pounds," said the former three division champion.  "That would be sacrificing too much...But I am going to tell the truth, it is something that is latent.  It is still there.  Everything depends on Oscar, that he accepts the weight that I've always told him at 160..."

Trinidad also stated that the fight would need to be promoted by Don King and not Golden Boy Promotions.

Trinidad De La Hoya is not the fight people want to see. Also the Don King aspect will hurt the chances of this fight. Oscar doesnt want to copromote with him, and he definitly isnt gonna let Golden Boy doesnt have their hand in the pot

Truthfully I think this fight sells itself and sells well. Both of these fighters have rabid fan bases. Many of Oscar's fans feel their man got the shaft in the first fight and have spent the last eight years wanting that to be corrected. They'd buy it. Puerto Rican fight fans, while they have rallied to Miguel Cotto, haven't had a national boxing hero like Trinidad since he retired. This is a fight that would draw pretty well on PPV and would give a nice bit of closure to the careers of both guys. However, I do agree that the promotions angle will be the stumbling block. There is no way that Oscar is gonna place sole-promotional power in the hands of Don King. If Felix isn't willing to go any other way then this fight simply won't happen.

I guess that my worry about the fight selling itself is it has been so long since De La Hoya and Trinidad last faught, that some of the buzz has been lost. Especially with the cloud of the Mayweather fight over De La Hoyas head. I still think that is the bigger draw. And yeah promotionwise, this fight wont happen. Oscar wont come in 1000 feet around King and I cant blame him.

It has been a long time and both guys are past their best. But I still think it'd be competitive. Neither guy wants to end their career with a loss and I think boxing fans would buy this one. Especially since both have such loyal fan followings. If I were DLH I wouldn't go near Don King neither. Can't blame him one bit on that one.
