Born on July 26, 1850 in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Tricky Nichols (Frederick C. Nichols) played for the New Haven Elm Citys, Boston Red Caps, St. Louis Brown Stockings, Providence Grays, Worcester Ruby Legs and Baltimore Orioles over the course of his 6 year career. Nichols broke into the bigs on April 19, 1875 with the New Haven Elm Citys, and put up a 3.03 ERA in 288 innings pitched in 1875, his rookie year.

Most people believe that Tricky Nichols's best season was 1877, when he posted a 2.60 ERA, won 18 games and struck out 80 batters.
