The Cleveland Indians signed another veteran reliever to try out for their closer role Thursday when Keith Foulke signed a one-year $5 million field. There's also a mutual option for 2008 and a number of performance incentives that could push Foulke's salary to $7.
The club made room for Foulke on its 40-man roster by designating reliever Brian Sikorski for assignment.
Foulke, 34, joins four other veteran relievers signed by the Tribe this offseason and is the third with closing experience. Foulke will battle Joe Borowski for the ninth-inning job, though the two could very well end up sharing the responsibility. The Indians also signed Aaron Fultz and Roberto Hernandez.
Foulke has a career record of 41-34 with a 3.30 ERA and 190 saves in 588 games over 10 seasons with the Giants, White Sox, A's and Red Sox.
The Tribe may also add another starter to their pitching staff, the Indians currently are one of the final three teams being considered by Mark Mulder. Some sources say that the Tribe and their 2-year offer are the front-runners for Mulder at this point.
