The Miami Dolphins announced today that Trent Green, two weeks off of a severe grade three concussion, will be placed on injured reserve putting an end to not only his season, but possibly his career.Since suffering his latest concussion against the Houston Texans, there has been speculation on whether Green will choose to retire.
The Dolphins ended the speculation by making the decision for him.
"At this point, this is the best thing for Trent and the team," Dolphins coach Cam Cameron said in a statement.
Green is in his first season with Miami, and remains committed to the team and to the game.
"I realize this is in the best interest of my long-term health, and I want nothing but the best for the team. Right now I haven't made any decisions about my future, but I talked with the Dolphins about staying involved in some capacity the rest of the season."
In spite of the overwhelming opinion of his peers and several doctors, Green intends to return to the field at some point.
Miami inked Green to a three year deal upon his acquisition from Kansas City, but there is surely language in the contract stating the Dolphins can terminate the deal upon a severe injury.
The 0-6 Dolphins will finish the rest of the year with current starter Cleo Lemon, and 2nd round draft pick John Beck, who many feel should be starting now with an impending top three pick on the horizon.
Miami severely needs to find some consistency at Quarterback, where they’ve started 11 men at the position since Dan Marino retired in 1999.
Nevertheless, their focus today should be on Green.
The decision on his Dolphins career is all but made. The decision regarding the rest of his life however still looms and is clearly the most important.
