Travis Henry - Innocent, But Still Pretty Dumb

18

by ASwaff

The announcement came minutes ago that Denver Broncos running back Travis Henry will not be suspended for the remainder of the season following a failed drug test.

According to ESPN.com , Henry faced a year-long suspension because he had previously broken the league's substance abuse policy. However, Henry won his appeal on the argument that he had not smoked marijuana, but had only been exposed to second-hand smoke.

Does this strike anyone else as completely idiotic? I'm not calling Henry a liar - I totally believe him. But, because I believe him, I am able to say this - when you're on notice from the league because of past indiscretions with illegal drugs, why on earth would you put yourself in the situation to be exposed to second-hand marijuana smoke?

It turns out he didn't smoke dope, but I still think the league should suspend him for BEING a dope. After other players have been suspended for giving the league a black eye merely by being in the wrong place at the wrong time, I think the same punishment should be carried out on Henry. These players need to know better, and they need to learn their lessons.

So, here it is, for those who apparently need this commonsense advice verbalized for them: If you've already been in trouble with the league for drug offenses, DON'T hang around when illegal drugs are being used.

End of lesson.

The NFL shouldn't even have marijuana as part of a suspension. It does not enhance your performance, why are the banning that? I guess that's why Ricky Williams went to Canada.

Driving drunk doesn't enhance your performance, either, but they hand out suspensions and punishments for that. It's a matter of them trying to protect their product. The fact that it doesn't enhance their performance is exactly why they have a ban on it. It's an illegal drug that negatively affects your body. The problem here isn't the controlled substance policy of the NFL, it's that it is a league full of people who seem to lack any semblance of common sense.

Drunk driving potentially affects other people on the road, only if you are smoking weed while driving is it dangerous.

I understand that drunk driving affects other people, too. Which is just another reason for the league to punish people who do it. However, my point is that both are detrimental to their product, both in terms of health and in terms of image.

And JuT, that's not unfair. It's science. Marijuana that is not being used for medicinal purposes is detrimental to your health. That's a fact. There is no side to this argument.

If they want to destroy their body, that is their choice.

If it negatively affects your health, it negatively affects your body. How do you make that distinction? What's the difference?

And their right to destroy their body is negated by their contracts as professional athletes. That's why they have so many clauses against motorcycle riding, sky diving, and other dangerous activities. Your right to destroy your body is greatly reduced when someone is paying you for your body.

But marijuana is a "gateway" drug -it will lead you down a perilous path of late night snacking, thorough video game enjoyment and endless variations in construction of smoking paraphernalia .

is it really possible for second hand marijuana to realllly show up on a drug test? you'd have to have been hot boxing about 10 minutes before the test i think for it to still be in your system.

I did a brief search on this issue, and everything I found said that second-hand smoke could set off a positive test, but that it was highly unlikely. They intentionally set drug tests at a certain level of detection for THC to avoid false positives. What I read said that drug test might still detect THC in urine, but the concentration would have to be incredibly high, and even then, would only be detectable for about a day, maybe two.

cannabinols and cannabinolic acids are made by your body naturally - especially in times of stress and or duress - it's NORMAL to have some level of cannabinols in your system, so that's why it's at a certain many parts per million and not just "some".

For second hand smoke to show up on a test, he would have to 1) been RIGHT next to the person(s) smoking, for a while and 2) it would have to be within 2-3 days or less (depending on his body fat) of the test.

Marijuana is banned because the government made it illegal when a newspaper billionaire wanted to tear down forests for his paper instead of using cheaper, longer lasting and less revenue generating hemp paper, so he had it made illegal - which it was until World War II when the ban was lifted so farmers could make hemp fiber for rope and cloth production. The League has to uphold a Public Image.

The government made it illegal (again) because of ignorance and greased pockets. Hemp production is many times more effective than cotton - it takes MUCH less water, has a WAY shorter growing season (you can actually grow two crops of hemp in the time of one yield of cotton), it yields 8 times the fiber per acre (so you're getting 16 times as much material from the same land) and it actually aerates and fertilizes the soil upon decay, whereas cotton depletes the soil and has to be burned off.

Cotton farmers in Arizona are all subsidized by the government. One farmer told me he HATES growing cotton because he doesn't make any money off of it (it actually costs more than he sells it for) and it is too much labor and machinery. But he grows it because the government subsidizes cotton. The government PAYS them to grow a crop that loses money! YOUR government.

The same farmer could grow a half acre of weed twice a year and subsidize the government to let him! It doesn't make dollars, it must make sense.

And THAT's the problem. If lawmakers did what's RIGHT, and it wasn't illegal anymore, every body would have a garden, special interest groups would be screwed and America would be nothing but a bunch of green thumbed potheads instead of a bunch of law-breaking potheads we have now...

Hempseed oil is incredibly nutritious and has remarkable qualities for ANY vegetable based oil. Ethanol could easily be made from the cellulose and residual plant matter not used in fiber production.

So it can nourish you, clothe you, get you where you're going AND crack open a narrow, stodgy mind... Marijuana, which grows - get this, like a WEED - if used to it's fullest extent could solve many of the world's economic pressures - yet it is illegal. (Because there's too much money to be made in petroleum, cotton and soybeans)
