Tracking Wilkerson's K's (part 2)

9
Vote

It’s been a week since the first installment of “Tracking Wilkerson’s K’s,” so it’s time for the first update.

Brad Wilkerson continued his torrid strikeout pace this week as he racked up 8 more to stay atop the major league leader board. He’s up to 31 Ks on the young season, but Adam Dunn managed to cut the lead this week from 5 to 4. One bright side is that, while Wilkerson continues to strike out way too much, he is now on pace for just 264 strikeouts this year, down from his 287 pace last week.

Richie Sexson also gained a lot of ground on Wilkerson this week. He’s up to 26 Ks.

While setting himself down on 8 strikeouts this week, Wilkerson went just 3-for-16 (.188) with one homerun, two RBIs and four runs. He also walked 4 times to maintain a disappointing 5:1 strikeout to walk ratio and manged to get just 6 total bases. His performance this past week included one hat trick on Thursday on an 0-for-4 outing against Seattle.

Wilkerson’s batting average got at high as .200 this week before settling back down to .186, up just one point from last week. One bright spot is his one-base percentage. His OBP improved to from .214 to .260 this week. Hopefully that’s a sign of better things to come, as that’s the one thing on offense the Rangers could really use from him.

John Patterson leads Wilkerson in K's with 32; although, Patterson is supposed to pile up K's.

Not quite every at bat, but close. He's struck out 14 times in the last 5 games, putting himself right up there among the strikeout leaders. During that stretch of racking up 14 Ks, he's gone 2-for-22, lowing his BA from .273 to .212. He's batting .163 in his last 10 games. Oh yeah, and that five game stretch involves one golden sombrero and, YES, even one platinum toilet.

He has before, but I wouldn't say "always." In 2000 with the Florida Marlins, he had 187 Ks, just 8 behind the current record set by Adam Dunn in 2004. After that, the most he had was 156 in 1999, then 148 in 2005 and 140 in 2002. So, he's been way up there, but I wouldn't exactly call it flirting with the record.

That's right, DNL. At least, that's what I've always heard. 3 Ks is a hat trick, 4 is a golden sombrero, and 5 is a platinum toilet. I don't know what 6 would be. I don't think anyone's done that before.
