Tottenham's Ledley King to miss 6-8 weeks

8
Vote

Tottenham Hotspur will be forced to start the 2006-7 Premier League campaign without star defender and captain Ledley King.

King has suffered a knee injury which will cause him to miss at least six weeks. As well as the opening month of the Premier League season, King could be ruled out of Spurs' first UEFA Cup tie.

Spurs manager Martin Jol confirmed the news on the club website.

King, a semi-regular for the national side, also missed the World Cup with a broken bone in his foot.

The King injury blow comes a day after Spurs reluctantly agreed terms for the transfer of England midfielder Michael Carrick to Premier League rivals Manchester United.

Spurs are going to struggle this year with all that's gone on. I can't see them challenging for the European places they were challenging for last year.

struggle i think is too strong a word, but repeating last season will be tough.

certainly there's greater challenges this year. for one, spurs will have to play more than 40 matches this season. they only played the minimum - 38 premier league, 1 fa cup, 1 league cup - in 2005-6. the additional matches - and let's hope it's more than 42! - will put a strain on the squad.

on the other hand, the additions of zakora and berbatov have strengthened the side. more needs to be done.

i see a top half finish and a possible uefa cup place again.

imho, carrick was spurs' best player last season. and, as spurs finished 5th, that's nothing to sniff at. he's not established himself in the england side, partly because of the d!ckhead coaching the side.

I was going to say something about the headline, too.

1. It could mean: Ledley King, who is injured, is no longer on the Sprus
2. It could mean: The Spurs are going to start the season with Ledley King who is no longer injured (as in, Start Season With Healthy...)
3. Some might be confused about the Spurs in question (San Antonio Spurs are actually called the Spurs, not a nickname for something else)
4. The first sentence of the article has nothing to do with the headline
5. Plus that apostrophe is completely wrong, there's nothing possesive to speak of.

Sorry, I'm a writer/editor by trade so these things bug me. A better headline would be something like Hotspurs Lose King to Injury, Transfer Carrick

thanks for the advice.

1. point taken 2. point taken 3. this is posted under soccer news. 4. i don't agree. 5. wrong. tottenham hotspur are also known as "spurs" or "the spurs". the correct possessive is spurs'.

i'll re-write the headline and hyperlink my earlier post on the carrick transfer it you like, but i gotta say this is nitpicky for a bloody wiki.

Spurs' is the abbreviation of Hotspur, so Spurs' is written like that. (Spurs being the abbreviated plural of Hotspur) Also, the headline makes perfect sense to me. They will be starting the season without Ledley King who is injured. And the first line was summing up the Spurs' offseason. As fo ambiguity, if people read his article because of it, it is a good thing.

You can click move at the bottom of the page, and then change the headline. I think it's actually fine, but if you want to move the page, feel free.

It's the right possessive but it's not supposed to be possessive. Just plural. Alex, I think what you're going for is a contraction, which would be 'Spurs, not Spurs'. I know it's nit-picky, but I'm not the only one that brought it up so it's not just me.

King missed a lot of games last season as well and they still did pretty good. I see them definitely in for UEFA and contending for big cup if they get Dafoe on track - or if they trade him for a big name striker.
