Torre turns down the Yanks!

Holy Cow! I guess he showed them who's boss. The Yankees brass must feel like idiots. They spend 10 days deciding on if they should bring him back, and obviously they didn't even know he wanted to come back.

This ends chapter 1 of many of the Yankees offseason.

The Yankees obviously didn't want him back. They knew Torre wasn't going to take a pay cut and work for one year (essentially having to win a pennant that year in order to have the contract extended). The Yankees did it with Showalter, and teams do it all the time, make a low-ball offer you know won't get accepted. That way John Q. thinks you tried to hold onto the player/coach/manager.
