Daisuke Matzusaka faced Dustin McGowan at Fenway Park on July 14th 2007. It was their first start for both of them after the all-star break, and it's also the third game out of a four game series that they're playin.
David Ortiz got things started for the Red Sox early in the game. In the first inning, he hit a home run off of a 3-0 pitch, ending his 34 game, 129 at-bat homerless streak. His last homer was on April 21st. Eric Hinske homered in the fourth inning as well, giving the Red Sox a 4-1 lead.
Dice-K was doing all right until he gave up a 2 run jack off Aaron Hill in the sixth inning. He also gave up an RBI hit off of Troy Glaus that inning, which made Terry Francona and the Red Sox nervous. He struck out a season low 2 batters. In the sixth inning, he allowed three runs, and the Blue Jays seemed like they were coming back.
Even though Dice-K didn't pitch that great, Red Sox bats made him win today, as catcher Jason Varitek homered, which only got things started for the Red Sox that inning. Dustin Pedroia hit an RBI single, Manny Ramirez hit a sacrifice fly, and Kevin Youklis hit an RBI single, making Dice-K happy as they scored five runs altogether that inning.
That was all the offense they needed as Manny Delcarmen, who is really making a name for himself so far this season with a 1.32 ERA, and Hideki Okajima secured the victory for the Red Sox, maintaining the 9-4 lead, which kept the Red Sox happy.
