Defense Dooms Sox to Sweep
The Boston Red Sox (12-7, 1st in AL East) defense committed four errors and they were unable to bail out starter Julian Tavarez (L, 0-2) against a potent Toronto Blue Jays (10-10, 3rd in AL East) offense, losing tonight 10-3. Roy Halladay (W, 3-0) pitched extremely well, striking out 10 over 8 innings and allowing only 3 runs. Shane Marcum pitched a perfect ninth.

Mike Lowell continued his power surge, hitting his 4th home run in the 4th off of Halladay. David Ortiz and Eric Hinske each added an RBI to round out the Boston offense. However, the real story was the defense, or lack thereof. Jason Varitek, Wily Mo Pena, Manny Ramirez, and Hinske all committed errors, making all four runs given up by reliever Kyle Snyder unearned.
Vernon Wells also hit his fourth home run of the year in the 4th inning, stole a base, and he, Frank Thomas, and Lyle Overbay each had 3 RBIs. In the bad news column was catcher Gregg Zaun hurting his finger early on and having to leave the game. He was replaced by Jason Phillips, who went 2-4.
Coming Up Next... The Red Sox head to Camden Yards to take on Daniel Cabrera (1-1, 4.10) and the Baltimore Orioles. They send ace Curt Schilling (2-1, 3.81) to the hill.
Toronto will take the short trip down to the Bronx to face the New York Yankees. The Blue Jays will throw A.J. Burnett (1-1, 5.57) against Andy Pettitte (1-0, 1.78).
