Top Ten QB Prospects, Vince Young's Free Fall

TOP 10 QUARTERBACKS FOR THE 2006 NFL DRAFT

  1. Matt Leinart, USC
  2. Jay Cutler, Vanderbilt
  3. D.J. Shockley, Georgia
  4. Brodie Croyle, Alabama
  5. Brett Basanez, Northwestern
  6. Vince Young, Texas
  7. Charlie Whitehurst, Clemson
  8. Omar Jacobs, Bowling Green
  9. Kellen Clemons, Oregon
  10. Paul Pinegar, Fresno State

CBS Sportsline has released their top 10 prospects by position, according to GM Jr Scouting LLC, for next month’s NFL draft.

Looking at the quarterback rankings I am surprised at how far Vince Young’s stock has dropped. There is a chance that the two-time Rose Bowl MVP won’t even be a top 10 pick.

The Texans gave David Carr a contract extension securing their QB position and pretty much locking up Reggie Bush as the top pick. The Saints went to free agency to acquire Drew Brees as their quarterback of the future which leaves the Titans at number three as the first team in need of a quarterback. I seriously doubt that Norm Chow will want Young over Matt Leinart whom he coached to two National Championships at USC. It’s safe to say that there is not a quarterback in the world that Chow knows or trusts better than Leinart. That is why Matt Leinart will be the first quarterback taken in the draft.

Picking number four and five are the Jets and the Packers. The Jets just worked out a deal with Washington and acquired Patrick Ramsey and the Packers drafted their quarterback of the future last year in Aaron Rodgers.

The next team to need a qb is the Raiders, who have the number 6 pick, and reports are that Jay Cutler is the man at the top of their board. The next logical spot would be the Lions at number nine but they have signed John Kitna and Josh McCown already and they still have a lot of money tied up in Joey Harrington. Wherever Young falls to he only has himself to blame. His PR has been one disaster after another since his magical night in Pasadena. The hiring and mishandlings of his agent and a less than par performance at the College Football All-Star Challenge in Miami put the pressure on Young at least “show up” at the NFL Combine which also turned into a nightmare when Young didn’t work-out and then had the Wonderlic troubles.

Sure the Wonderlic test doesn’t indicate how a player will perform on the field but is one great college season enough to be a top pick? Young struggled reading defenses in college and often made stupid mistakes that led to turnovers. Given the fact that he did have a great season this past year but the reality of it was that it took him three years to grasp the Texas offense and Young finally succeeded after the coaches dumbed it down for him.

Young does have two things going for him. The fact that he is a physical specimen and the NFL will always, always take a shot on a guy like him. His athleticism alone can and will allow him to have some success in the NFL. The second thing he has going for him is that he still has his pro-day on the Texas campus where he is expected to shine.

Young can and should use that as a springboard to move up on the draft chart. With guys like Croyle and Basanez ranked ahead of him how far Young moves up should be his choice but then again everything else has been up to this point as well.

I'm surprised that Shockley is so high. He's toolsy but has only one year to demonstrate his skills, and it speaks highly of Sportsline that they have him up there.

Do you really believe Ramsey is seen by the Jets as anything other than a Jay Fiedler sort of back-up? The fact that they only ceded one 6th round pick for him sugggests this to be the case and suggests the NYJ would still consider the QB slot unfilled. Of course, the point can always be made that it is complete lunacy to spend $20MM on signing a #4 QB with oddles of upside but only a 50% shot of success. Frankly, they should see if a trade down is feasible.

I just realized that I said Chan Gailey instead of Norm Chow when talking about the Titans. Sorry for my brief moment of stupidity.

You've got to be kidding me. What else does Vince Young have to prove? He won a national championship. If Heisman voting had taken place after the Rose Bowl, he'd have won the Heisman. He had a 60% completion rating last year. He was the first college QB to ever rush for 1,000 yards and pass for 3,000 yards in a single season. That's ridiculous. I don't get the hyping of Matt Leinart. Last week, I was watching Around the Horn, and Jay Plasche called Leinart possibly the best college QB in history. WHAT?? He wasn't even the best college QB at the ROSE BOWL! And now Sportsline has Vince rated behind Croyle, Shockley and Basanez? That's absurd. Sorry, but this is the craziest thing I've seen in the draft in a long, long time.

Sorry, I gotta say one other thing. I think the progress he made in a year shows the kind of upside he has. He's not like Vick who was pretty much the same player year after year. His junior year, he made great strides in passing efficiency, and he got a heck of a lot better at reading defenses and cutting down on passing mistakes. He has amazing pocket awareness. He's still quite young, and his abilities will only increase under good coaching. You're right to say he only had one great year, but I think that one great year really showed his work ethic, leadership and ability to adapt and improve. He might get drafted low, and if he does, somebody's going to make an absolute steal.

Sorry, I have to say one more thing. You're right to say that he only had one good season. But, he's still quite young. And in that one great season, he made great strides in passing efficiency and reading defenses. He has absolutely amazing pocket awareness. He doesn't make nearly as many stupid decisions as he used to, and I believe he'll continue to improve under good coaching. This one great season really showed his work ethic, leadership and ability to improve. If he gets drafted low, somebody will get an absolute steal on Vince Young.

I think this is just silly. Anyone who thinks Vince Young will NOT get taken in the top 3 QBs is just kidding themselves. Leinart, Cutler and Young will be the forst 3 QBs taken, perhaps even in that order. My prediction Tenn - Leinart; Oak-Cutler; Az-Young

Mets, I think that's a good pick. They just got a solid RB, you'd better believe they'll be looking for someone better, younger and healthier than Warner to be under center. I also like Young for Detroit. Reunite him with old teammate Roy Williams. Not to mention that he had great success at UT throwing to good TEs with Bo Scaife and David Thomas. Detroit just got an incredible TE with Dan Campbell. Vince would be a great fit in Motown.
