Top 20 Games Worth Watching

Okay, so what if college football is a month away…Numerous idiotic preseason polls are already out. Since everybody seems to have their own bogus college football poll that doesn’t amount to shit, I figured why not waste my time complying one of my own to cause more chaos. For those who aren’t fortunate enough to travel around the country in a VIP RV, John Daly style with Jack on ice & purchase a ticket in the LastRow, here’s my “Preseason Top 20 Games” I must sit in front of my Boob Tube for…”PRESEASON” being the key word! For those of you who don’t agree with my Top 20, well there’s a shocker…College Football at its finest, it’s what we love! What’s a inadequate poll without a “Thanks For Coming”, better known as the glorification of the art who are “Receiving Additional Votes”…Which other games not in the Top 20 worthy of receiving this oh, so satisfying honor? Please Note, this poll comes with a “Viewer Discretion is Advised” disclamier.

20. Florida vs. Georgia, Oct. 28 Yeah, Urban Meyer won his first Cocktail Party, but the Dawgs didn’t have D.J. Shockley. That won’t have him this year either…Whatever this mean?

19. California at USC, Nov. 18 Cal has usually been a thorn in USC’s side. Should be no different again this time around.

18. Florida at Florida State, Nov. 25 The Gators pummeled the Noles last year, but that was a young, banged up FSU team. Both teams should be better this season.

17. Alabama at LSU, Nov. 11 The loser will likely be out of the SEC West title hunt.

16. South Carolina at Florida, Nov. 11 Get the hype started now for Steve Spurrier's first game back in the Swamp; Urban Meyer had better win it. “The Ole Ball Coach” Bowl…Enough said.

15. Arizona State at USC, Oct. 14 Shootout, shootout, shootout…Remember last year?

14. Alabama at Auburn, Nov. 18 “The Iron Bowl” is always a classic, at least one of the two will be in a position to win the SEC West title.

13. LSU at Florida, Oct. 7 Is this round one of the SEC championship? If both teams are unbeaten, this will be a battle of top five teams looking to stay in the national title chase.

12. Penn State at Ohio State, Sept. 23 The “Whiteout Game” revisited Horseshoe style in Columbus.

11. Texas at Nebraska, Oct. 21 This could be a preview of the Big 12 championship…Not that this is saying very much

10. Florida at Tennessee, Sept. 16 Always the first big SEC game of the year, this is when either Urban Meyer’s Gators take a first step to a huge season or when Tennessee officially announces that 2005 was an aberration.

9. Virginia Tech at Miami, Nov. 4 The home team hasn’t had much luck in this series over the last two years. In any event, it’ll be a shock if this doesn’t represent the Coastal Division champion.

8. West Virginia at Louisville, Nov. 2 This is the one Big Easters are drooling over. If all goes according to form, this might be for more than just the conference title.

7. Florida State at Miami, Sept. 4 It’s a shame this isn’t played after the two superpowers get a few tuneups. Hopefully it won’t be the ugly slopfest of last year.

6. Nebraska at USC, Sept. 16 It’s the first time these two have played since a 21-21 tie in 1970.

5. Michigan at Ohio State, Nov. 18 Former Buckeye head man John Cooper was fired partly because he couldn’t beat Michigan. Wolverine head man Lloyd Carr has lost four of his last five battles with the Buckeyes…How’s that Hot Seat LLLLLLLllllllloyd?

4. LSU at Auburn, Sept. 16 Alabama will have something to say in the matter, but this will likely be for the SEC West title. The last two games between the two have been decided by a total of four points.

3. Oklahoma vs. Texas (in Dallas), Oct. 7 Oklahoma should be back to being Oklahoma, while Texas fans hope their team doesn’t go back to being Texas in this series. A loss by OU would get people talking about how the series made a dramatic turn after two UT wins

2. Notre Dame at USC, Nov. 25 Notre Dame has lost its last two games at USC by a combined score of 85-23. Just imagine the hype if both teams are unbeaten. It might be better than the national championship, thanks to the BCS.

1. Ohio State at Texas, Sept. 9 The classic between these two last year got overlooked as the season wore on because of the great USC-Notre Dame game, the amazing national title race, and the all-timer bowl season. Can this game do for Ohio State what it did last year for Texas? If not, this should launch the Longhorns to another huge year.

Surprise surprise, the same ones that are always on a list like this. California and USC should be way higher than 19th, Cal could springboard a national title run with a win there. West Virginia and Louisville should both be undefeated at the time of that game and that could also have national title implications. LSU and Auburn though? No way is that game as important as fourth. Need a reason? How about Auburn's 24-10 loss to Wisconsin in last year's Capital One Bowl.

On to another point...Preseason polls are not bogus. How else would we measure failures and successes? The beauty of a preseason poll is that sometimes it is a little ridiculous and not always the most accurate piece of work in the world. Taking that Wisconsin and Auburn example, Auburn was ranked 7th and Wisconsin 20th heading into that bowl, and Wisconsin completely outplayed Auburn like they were the 7th ranked team in the nation. In this case, are we to believe that every poll that comes out after--say--Week 6 is any more accurate than a preseason poll? How about Nebraska's win over Michigan?

Preseason polls are fun for us because we can see just how good we are at predicting things, and then compare them to the "experts." That's why we created the AGM poll.

I can't get over the lack of "Army vs Navy" on your list - who cares how good the teams are, it's a tradition. It's like the Cowboys playing on thanksiving or the Steelers falling apart in Boston during the winter months...

For what it's worth, the list was top 20 games worth WATCHING. It's not like people don't care about the tradition of that game, but it's not the kind of game you get psyched about watching.

ASwaff is right on this one, tradition is great but no one wants to see two bad teams play it out on a Saturday when they could be watching teams with future NFLers go at it for an undefeated record.

Army vs. Navy is the type of game I watch highlights for during ESPN and go "Oh, thats nice."

It's kind of funny how people are so down on the conference that's sent a team to the last four National Championship games.

In college football though what that translates to right now is one team dominating a very mediocre conference. With Vince Young gone, whose going to make the Big 12 respectable when compared to the SEC, Big Ten, and ACC?

And while the top of the litter has been good, would you watch the Big 12 Championship, usually a predetermined one-sided affair, over other conference championships?

BTW the stat givwen with #2 is a bit misleading...the Irish played the Trojans very close last year and would have won if not for a couple of miracle plays by Leinart.

And isn't the BCS adding a fifth game, playoff style, to eliminate the past problems of determining a champion?

Would I watch it? Well, yes, but I'm a Texas fan, so I have a vested interest in the Big 12. I don't know that I can say I'd watch it over other conference championships. That's like asking if I'd watch one BCS Bowl over another. I'll watch as much of every game as I can.

And look for the Sooners to return to prominence this year. Rhett Bomer made huge improvements throughout the season, they'll have a healthy Adrian Peterson running all over defenses, and they are coming off a very big bowl win against Oregon. And even with Vince gone, Texas will be a very good team. People are underrating them, forgetting that they were a very good team before Vince got there. He got them over the hump to BCS games, but it's not like they're chopped liver without him.

Texas is a good team, but with 2 QB's who have played a combined total of 0 NC2A games that spells trouble, just ask OU how they did when Rhett Bomer had to come in for his first snaps last year.

That's a good point, but there's more to OU's stumble last year than just a new starting QB. They lost almost their entire defense, and the lost Peterson to injury. Those two things are things that (fingers crossed) UT won't have to face this season.

Um, where is the Penn St. v. Notre Dame game. That came is going to show whether either club is a national championship contender. Yet, you don't list it?

In some Preseason polls PSU don't even appear. Can Joe Pa really do it two years in a row, or was last year a fluke. The same could be said about ND, but after last year's USC epic battle in South Bend could you really leave that game off...I don't know?

With Penn State they are missing a key part for their return to greatness and thats their QB who made a lot happen based off his athleticism. ND still has their pieces in place even though I think that last years results came from a bit of overachieving.
