Top 10 Toughest NFL Stadiums

64
Vote

by user The Beast

So, its third and a long seven in the fourth quarter. Your team is down by four points a field goal won't do. Your team is at midfield. The opposing crowd is screaming in your face. Which stadium would a team fear to be in. Well, here is a list of the toughest stadiums in the NFL.

10. Lincoln Financial Field The Linc as they call it is new, but during their run to the Super Bowl, this place was rockin.

eaglesscenic.jpg

9. RCA Dome The stadium isn't too loud, but it is very tough because the Colts seem to play better football here.

rca403.jpg

8. Soldier Field Its cold, windy and miserable. Plus you'll get wacked by the Bears' ferocious defense.

sold750.jpg

7. FedEx Field Can seat the most fans. The 91,000 are right on top of the players too.

fedex701.jpg

6. Heinz Field The Steelers have been hard to beat here, fans extremely loud too.

heinz400.jpg

5. Lambeau Field Easily has the most tradition of any stadium in the NFL. During the Holgram era, this place was probably 1 or 2, but the Pack have slacked off.

Lambeau_Field.jpg

4. Quest Field The 12th man extremely loud in last year's playoffs. A million times better than the Kingdome. I wonder if the shad keeps the fans energized.

seahawks502.jpg

3. Gillette Stadium Ask Peyton Manning if its tough to win here.

gillette730.jpg

2. Invesco Field If the fans don't get to you, the altitude will.

INVESCO-Field_1.jpg

1. Arrowhead Stadium Ah, here we are numero uno. The Sea of Red is amazing. The fans are the loudest in the league. Passionate bunch of people.

I'm a long time Chiefs fan, nice to see what I've known for a long time. I also live part of the year in Washington so I've made it out to Qwest a few times. Whoever says its the loudest with the best fans is crazy. The fans are terrible, they don't back their teams (why the hell would you throw snowballs at somebody that took a terrible franchise to a superbowl?). The fans in Seattle don't deserve a winning franchise.

I gotta disagree with your choice of the Linc. The stadium is "nice," just like Camden Yards is "nice." It's so open though, that it's not really imposing. The only thing difficult there is the team you are facing. If the Eeagles sucked, playing there would be easy. I'd suggest replacing it with Giants stadium. Even when either of the teams that play there are bad, no one wants to go in there with the cold nasty swirling winds and those fans. Heck, the Jets fans are even rowdier than the Giants fans. But then again, I'm biased.

THere are certain things about stadiums that can make them tough, windier stadiums, stadiums with bad surfaces... But overall it matters mostly about how good the team is.

Actually I was watching this show on espn once, and it was about loud stadiums. Teams that have dome roofs actually arent as loud as teams with open roofs. Sounds like it should be other way around but its not. They tested it with decibal testing or what not. Arrowhead is built to be loud and the fans have conditioned to be loud. Makes any opposing team coming to arrowhead knowing what they are bout to face. We have some bad ass stats to that back all of it up. For instance in the month of December at Arrowhead we hold a 20-2 record best in the nfl I believe.

Quoted from Wikipedia about Arrowhead Stadium:

"Arrowhead has long held a reputation for being one of the loudest outdoor stadiums in the NFL due to the exuberance of the Chiefs' fans. Fan generated noise was once measured at 116 decibels[5] by the Acoustical Design Group of Mission, KS."

Quoted from Wikipedia about Qwest Field:

"Qwest Field has earned a reputation as arguably the loudest stadium in the NFL. Paul Allen had the architects design the structure of the stadium, especially the roof, to direct as much crowd noise as possible on the field. In addition, the north end zone seating, called the "Hawks Nest", was specifically designed for rowdy fans; the seating consists of metal bleachers which reflect sound, and fans often stomp to create even more. Since the 2005 season, more penalties for false starts have been called against visiting teams in Qwest Field than in any other NFL stadium. At one point during the 2006 season, the New York Giants complained that Qwest Field was artificially piping in noise in order to distract visiting quarterbacks from running a count."

"The Giants had 16 penalties for 114 yards, an extraordinary 11 of them false start penalties that can be directly attributed to the raucous Seahawks faithful of 67,102."

"During the 2005 NFC Championship Game against the Carolina Panthers, the decibel level recorded by Fox's telecast producers reached 137db."

Let's look at the facts again

Arrowhead Stadium - 116 db Qwest Field - 137 db

For comparison if we compare that decibel level to other noises:

116 db - Live Rock Concert 137 db - Jet Airplane Taking Off

In conclusion: Qwest Field is the loudest and ultimately the toughest stadium. Thank you...

Try and top that everyone else!

You make me laugh by how you sound saying you are hot shit.

What does having an aircraft flying over a stadium make it considerable to be a tough stadium anyway?

You never hear about the loudest stadium (Qwest Field) because you are so wrapped up with your team.

Look at the statistics punk then maybe you can begin to possibly understand the fundamentals of what the original arguement was and if we can reach to that high peak actually argue maturally.

As of the end of the 2006 NFL season, Arrowhead Stadium has a consecutive sell-out record of 141 games.

But consider also that Qwest Field opened in 2002 and has had 43 consecutive sellouts. If you do the math (43 sellouts/5 years the stadium has been open) it comes out to 8.6 games which is how many a team plays at their home.

So doing the same formula for Arrowhead (141 sellouts/35 years the stadium has been open) it comes out to 4.03 games!

So to make the other point that Anonymous Fanatic #13 made about the Chiefs dedicated fans, his fact still doesn't add up to Qwest Field's sellouts and the pride our fans have for our Seahawks team.

Got any more facts to throw at me Anonymous Fanatic #13?

I might be able to settle this little arguement I've been to 6 cheifs games, 5 seahawks games and 2 cardinals games.

LOUDEST STADIUM: 1. Seahawks 2. KC 3. Cardinals Best Tailgating: 1.KC 2. Cardinals 3. Seahawks Best Overall Experience: 1.Seahawks 2.Cardinals 3.KC

That's just my experience, I mean I did sit 50 yard line 2 rows up at all seahawks games, and had average tickets at arrowhead but cardinals did slightly out do arrowhead sorry man.... excellent tailgating though

I'm pretty sure then that would make a you a biased jerk off who doesn't give a damn about what this topic was originally for. In my opinion, you have no right to say a single word about Arrowhead on this page. You are a pathetic blogger. Go join a Chiefs fanatic page because thats the only place where you and your stupid "facts" are applicable. Go down another beer and drown out the fact that you Arrowhead stadium is NO LONGER the toughest stadium and that your team sucks all together. WOO HOO you beat the pussy vikings who are worse than your team! You and your drunken fantasized fans only managed to make the vikings get ONE false start penalty! The powerful Bengals offensive performed THREE of them last week! Since 2005 Qwest Field has had 54 false starts against visiting team.

The Seahawks are a combined 27-6 at Qwest Field since the beginning of 2003—best in the NFC and tied for second-best home record in the NFL over the last 4+ seasons (Indianapolis is 28-5).

After I watch the Seahawks win tomorrow, I'll watch your "great and powerful" team go down and lose to the Chargers! Your team won't make the playoffs and won't get a winning record this season. Shut up and stop blogging here, you have no reason, respect, or argument about either your team or stadium.

Dear #13,

I must say that, no matter how vehemently you yap about how great the Krapass City Chiefs are and how loud your pathetic Arrowhead stadium is, let's look at the facts shall we?

Number 1: your beloved Chiefs are ranked 28 this week... which is surprising considering they were 31 last week... THEN, we've got the Seahawks who are ranked 7 this week and 9 last week! (That's top 10 rankings for the past 2 weeks!!!)

Number 2: What the hell does tailgating have to do with a stadium's volume? All it means is that you have the most fans who were too poor (or cheap) to buy tickets and that you "fans" would rather get "drunk off your ass" instead of root for your teams... how do you expect to enjoy and root for your team when you're so drunk you can even tell what's up and what's down? But wait, over there in Kansas City (a.k.a the middle of FUCKING nowhere... or the redneck capital of the US), drinking yourselves smart (which much be pretty damn hard to do for you guys) is the only way you can enjoy your games... *roflmao at the stupidity of it all*

and Number 3: as far as the actual volume of the stadiums... I did in fact type in "what is the loudest stadium in the nfl" and do you know came up as the first link on the page? QWEST FIELD! What facts, what honest to God facts can you give me, PROVING that Arrowhead stadium has the loudest stadium... time and time again, sports announcers and news casters have all proclaimed Qwest field as the loudest... and try finding facts that ARE NOT found on wikipedia because everyone knows that their facts can be skewed and edited. Sure, In years past (before the existence of Qwest field), Arrowhead was the loudest stadium, hands down. BUT; once Qwest field was built, the rankings changed and it was now the Seahawks, who belonged to the loudest stadium in the NFL. PLEASE, do everyone in this blog a favor and quit posting, unless you have something intelligible and MATURE to say. Quit your complaining about the Arrowhead's glory days and MOVE ON! God, you sound just like the idiot, GLOATING University of Washington fans who sat behind me and my dad on our way home from the game against USC (whom my dad and I are passionate fans of). Commenting on how USC lost against Texas in 2005... and I was just thinking... where was UW? Did they go to a bole game at all that year? Seriously... and then one of them was like "Reggie Bush shouldn't have gotten the Heisman, Vince Young's performance was way better in the BCS than his" and I thought... umm, compare the YEAR-ROUND stats buddy! Who do you think had better all 'round stats? Reggie Bush! You sound just like those sore losers... you're upset that Arrowhead stadium isn't the loudest anymore AND you're so wrapped up in Chiefs spirit and pride that you can't, WON'T register any other facts besides the ones that celebrate the Chiefs and their Arrowhead stadium!

Why don't you shut up, down another beer until you're drunk enough to enjoy your game, and whine like the pathetic, immature, BIG FAT EGOTISTICAL Chief inflated head of yours, because you're the ONLY person on this blog who is getting so damn worked up of the freaking volume of a stadium...

Hmn, I wonder what this genius' grammer grades were when he went to high school. Did you even graduate? Seriously, Try writing AT LEAST one sentence that doesn't contain crude language. Is that possibly possible for you? You sound like a bumbling idiot! And you're totally missing the point about sell out games... Arrowhead has been around since what, 1972? ...that's 35 years! 141 (not 134 you halfwit) consecutive sellouts in 39 years... That's not very impressive... with Qwest, however, it's only been around since 2002, so 5 years... in 5 years they've managed 43 consecutive sellouts! That's 98 games less than you, in 30 less years? Do the math! Are you retarded or something??

oh, and to clear the record, I'm #24's sister, I was the one who wrote that long response starting with "Dear #13"... and no, my brother wasn't too much of a "pussy" as you probably think he would be for allowing me to write you, in fact he was irritated with me, but I wrote it because I figured it could AT LEAST make you go away... but I was wrong. Oh and let me inform you, my brother is 19 years old has a girlfriend he's been dating for 2+ years, he's a shift manager at starbucks (she's in nursing school) and going to be getting his AA degree really soon, they both have their own cars and go out when they want and as long as they want... they're only held back by school and work. And what does masturbation have to do with anything?? You stupid prick! Go back to junior high (where you obviously belong) and finish up school because you obviously have the mind of a 14 year old boy and the intelligence of one as well. God, it's people like you who make me ashamed of America, honestly, you're a disgrace. As for me, no, I don't jack off because obviously i don't have a dick, i don't find the need to do it, and i think it's disgusting. Yeah, i can't go anywhere because i'm 17 and my parents still rule my life and i don't have a car because i'm more concerned with my schooling to take a stupid drivers test. And you know what bud? what about you? how old are you? I'll bet you're a balding fat 40 year old who either lives with his parents or lives alone. Because no woman would be attracted or interested in someone like you.

Please, do the world a favor and go kill yourself. No one wants you around and everyone here thinks your a joke.

Hahahah. Anyways on to more Arrowhead Stats, you on the other hand have shown me NOTHING on home field advantage or anything. *Yawns* Here read up on some more, take some time off your hands. Better yet Look at all these beauty stats.

-The Arrowhead Advantage, Part I: The Chiefs registered their 134th consecutive sellout at Arrowhead. During the Carl Peterson era, KC has produced a 14-5 (.737) record in home openers. The Chiefs are an NFL-best 21-4 (.840) record against NFC foes at Arrowhead since the start of the ‘95 campaign.

-The Arrowhead Advantage, Part II: Kansas City is 54-8 (.871) at Arrowhead dating back to ‘95 when holding foes to 21 points or less. The Chiefs are now 41-0 at Arrowhead dating back to ‘90 when holding opponents to 10 points or less. Since ‘94, the Chiefs are 25-6 (.806) against head coaches making their regular season debuts at Arrowhead.

-RB Larry Johnson’s Rushing Stats At Arrowhead The Chiefs own a 13-1 (.929) record at Arrowhead when RB Larry Johnson registers a 100-yard rushing game. KC is 11-0 at Arrowhead when Johnson rushes for two or more TDs, including a 35-30 win vs. Jacksonville (12/31/06) when Johnson had 33 carries for 138 yards and three TDs. The Chiefs also own a 9-0 record at Arrowhead when Johnson accumulates 30 carries or more.

In 16 career starts at Arrowhead, Johnson has averaged 124.7 rushing ypg and has accumulated 26 rushing TDs. He has topped the 100-yard barrier in 13 of those contest and has registered 51 runs of 10+ yards in those games. The Chiefs last 33 rushing TDs have all been scored by Johnson, the longest streak of rushing TDs by one player for the same team in NFL history.

Johnson is coming off a 123-yard performance. The Jaguars have allowed at least one rushing TD in each of their last five games. Jacksonville currently ranks 26th in the league in rushing defense, permitting 137.0 ypg. After permitting 282 rushing yards in a 13-10 loss vs. Tennessee (9/9), the Jaguars have relinquished an average of just 64.5 rushing ypg in their last two contests.

-QB Damon Huard Owns a 4-0 Record at Arrowhead QB Damon Huard is 4-0 as a starter at Arrowhead. In those four contests, Huard has completed 70 of 104 passes (67.3%) for 958 yards with six TDs and no INTs, numbers that translate into a sizzling 115.8 rating. In fact, Huard has compiled a 100.0 rating or better in all four of those victories. Huard is 6-0 when he posts a 100.0-rating game and is 5-0 in such games with the Chiefs

-Thou Shalt Not Pass at Arrowhead The Chiefs are 29-3 (.906) at Arrowhead dating back to ‘95 when the club forces two or more INTs. Since the start of the 2002 campaign, KC also boasts a stellar 23-1 (.959) record at home when it registers 2.0 or more sacks. KC registered 5.0 sacks in the club’s first home contest, a 13-10 win vs. Minnesota (9/23). Opposing passers have compiled a league-low 62.6 rating against KC this season. The Chiefs currently have 11.0 sacks on the year, the club’s best four-game total since having 11.0 sacks at the four-game mark in 2003.

-The Arrowhead Advantage

Kansas City owns an NFL-best 103-34 (.752) regular season mark at Arrowhead dating back to ‘90. Since the start of the 2002 campaign, the Chiefs are 9-2 (.818) at Arrowhead during the month of October. Only Philadelphia owns a better winning percentage in October home games over that span with a 9-1 (.900) record. KC is 7-2 at home under Herm Edwards, including a 35-30 victory vs. Jacksonville (12/31/06). The Jaguars are 14-18 (.438) on the road under Jack Del Rio, but are just 3-6 since the start of the 2006 campaign. Del Rio owns a 5-3 career mark against AFC West opponents.

-Winning the Turnover Battle Always Important at Arrowhead The Chiefs are 44-4 (.917) at Arrowhead with a positive takeaway margin dating back to ‘95. KC has won 17 consecutive games when positive at home dating back to 2002, the third-longest active streak in the league. The Chiefs have also registered at least one takeaway in 23 consecutive games, the longest active streak in the NFL. KC is 6-2 under Edwards when positive.

KC was actually -2 (1 take/3 gives) vs. Jacksonville (12/31/06) and still managed to register a 35-30 victory. The Chiefs won’t want to tempt fate again when facing a Jaguars squad that is 24-6 (.800) under Jack Del Rio with a positive turnover mark. Over that same span, the Jaguars are 3-15 (.167) in road games with a negative turnover differential. Jacksonville has committed just three turnovers in 2007. Only Indianapolis (2) has commited fewer.

Now go make me a double latte with froth. And for you little 17 year old, dont bother to take the test, dont need anymore dumb bitches driving around. *Yawns*. K thanku.

Alright lets take a look at this. At least half of your posts are copying the exact same facts over and over. So, if that is the case, let me put this in terms you can understand.

Since it's construction in 2002, Qwest Field has earned its reputation as the loudest stadium in the league. It gained national attention for this reputation during the November 27th, 2005 overtime game with the New York Giants who committed 11 false start penalties, prompting the Giants to complain before their 2006 game that Qwest Field was artificially pumping in noise in order to distract visiting offense from running a play. The fan noise contributed to a league-high 24 false-start penalties in 2005 alone. As a result the NFL has had representatives monitoring the noise levels. Since 2005 the Seahawks have tracked the number of false start penalties in the league and displayed the totals on the scoreboard to motivate the fans to make noise when the opposing offense is attempting to run a play. On October 21st, 2007 the St Louis Rams committed 6 false start penalties to raise the total since 2005 to 61, most in the NFL.

I don't give a fuck that donnie edwards is a bad-ass linebacker or that Larry Johnson only has 3 tds and has less than 600 rushing yards. And don't pull any shaun alexander shit on me cause he is a pussy and only runs when money is on the line cause none of that is the point. the point is arrowhead used to be top and now it can take a back seat to qwest field for loudest in the nfl. Thank you and fuck off

Your posts are all the same. The Arrowhead Advantage this, The Arrowhead Advantage that.

If you believe that Qwest Field artificially makes noise to make it seem louder, you are more ignorant and stupid than I thought you were. If you read news stories about that issue, the New York Giants complained to the NFL about it and it turn the NFL sent officials to Seattle to make sure they haven't and weren't pumping in noise over the loud speakers. And they came back saying that IT WAS ALL THE FANS CREATING THE NOISE.

San Francisco had 3 false starts last night from the crowd noise bring the total number of them up to 64 false starts since the 2005 campaign! I bet you didn't watch MNF just so you couldn't handle hearing the facts from the commentators and from the noise during the game. You barely hear the commentators on TV as it is.

Stop being ignorant of something thats true. As far as I know, wasn't it the PACKERS AND BRONCOS that beat the Chiefs AT HOME in the past two weeks? Your home-field advantage arguments stinks, you try and create a fake counter argument to qwest field by bringing up current players, teams and tailgating? who the hell cares about that. The Chiefs are going down this year, the loss of LJ is going to rock your team from top to bottom. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if your team loses the rest of the year. You have the Colts next week, Raiders, Chargers, Broncos, TItans, Lions, and lastly the Jets. All of these teams are going to kick the Chiefs asses. The Seahawks on the other hand are going to cruise into the playoffs with an easy division win and beat every team upcoming. No team we play has a winning record... Talk about an easy playoff run for us!

And if you feel like poking at my job and my income. First off grow up... Secondly, I'm paid a salary at Starbucks of 60,000 a year. A minimum wage worker here earns the highest in any of the 50 states. Seattle is ranked first in cities with people that are the most intellectual, most educated, most graduate degrees, most fittest, oh and the loudest NFL stadium! In Kansas, you pay a worker a horrible 2.65 per hour they work! How low can you go? Thats even lower than the Federal minimum wage! That tells me a lot about how great your city is! Nice opinion about the most intellectual, most educated, most graduate degrees, most fittest (bout the gayest thing I have ever heard), and the loudest stadium is no were even close. 19 year olds these days. Must take alot from there parents stuck up fucking city boys with there noses higher than Dallas up in the air. Your quit funny, but yet a fucking retard I must say (nice education there). And chiefs tailgating is just another great feature that we bring to arrowhead along with the most dedicated loudest crowd in the league. Ohh and along with the best radio pre-game talk and post game radio show in the league. Kansas City has way more to offer, cause we care about our team. Even if we have 2 bad home losses, that wont even hurt our homefield advantage as we have boosted it up there buy sell outs and the loudest stadium. Sooooo you little 19 year old china boy, I would love to see you in real life beat the living shit out of you, then take your car daddy helped you buy.

You don't even know what the cost of living is up here, nor do you know anything about any other team outside of Kansas City excuse me Mexico City about football.

What makes the Chiefs pre and post game shows so good to make them the best? Got a stat to back you up on that one?

If you feel so passionate and know that in the entire NFL, Arrowhead Stadium is by far THE LOUDEST stadium. Go and prove your point by contacting a sound measuring company to come to a Chiefs home game and prove that it is.

Your full of talk, but have yet to really prove any of your arguments. Where are your sources? My side of the argument has been written in many reputable newspapers and spoken about on television. I cannot recall the last time Arrowhead was ever mentioned about being loud or even for it being so loud that an opposing team had to create a rumor about artificial noise being pumped in to make it appear louder.

Every home field has great tailgating and a good fan base. But what makes the Chiefs so much better? They have a history of a winning record in the past because the stadium has been around for quite awhile. But take Qwest Field and the Seahawks for example, the stadium opened in 2002 and we are 29-6 since 2003 at home. Isn't that considered good in your opinion? Sure its not the Chiefs but the record is good.

Well let me give you some Seattle Seahawk commentator history then. Steve Raible and Warren Moon do the broadcasting for the Seahawks. Warren Moon actually played for the CHIEFS dumbass, talk about ignorance that you even down on retired chiefs players that played for your "beloved" team. Steve Raible played on the Seahawks from '76 till '81 and was forced into retirement because of a helmet to helmet hit. Since then he has been a sportscaster for exclusively the Seahawks and for the Seafair Hydroplane races we have here every summer.

Before Qwest Field, even the King Dome was known to be one of the loudest NFL stadiums and the Hawks had a 101-83 record there. I know that isn't great but since week 16 in 2002 at Qwest Field they're record is 30-6 .833! But you know what, records don't have to do with noise at all as you thought in your most recent comment.

We've had a great fan base for many years boy. Your too hung up on your team out in the tulle bushes that you don't give a shit about other teams fans or stadiums. What I've heard since I started arguing with you is that 1. you think your team is hot shit 2. you refuse to show other information besides home records to prove a loud factor of your stadium 3. your ignorant and biased as all get out 4. your punctuation blows 5. your vocabulary is very elementary and 6. you ultimately cannot argue whatsoever.

Why don't I here post game interviews of teams walking away from I guess a loss saying that Arrowhead was loudest place they've ever played at? Rex Grossman is coming to seattle this week and is going to show that he cannot yell over a 140+ db crowd. Hopefully you know even what a decibel is but I can't really tell judging just from how you talk to everyone on this blog.

You can't win this argument boy. Your in over your head big time

I have no need to because if you knew how to read, you would definitely notice that this blog was created in August of 2006. So apparently your a little behind on the times boy. Go read the statistics about what makes a stadium loud. Last time I checked it was based on false starts committed. How many have you and your gay fans helped contribute to since 2005 has Arrowhead smart ass? NOT EVEN CLOSE! Experts don't need to say it to prove the notoriously obvious fact. Since 2005, 64 — an average of three per game. That's 20 more than the Metrodome in Minnesota, where opponents have committed 43 false starts in the same time period. Loudest stadium in the NFL? Look to the Northwest. As I said above If ignorance is bliss, you must be the happiest person alive.

Seattle visitors feel the noise

Fred Mitchell | AROUND TOWN November 19, 2007 SEATTLE

The Seahawks refer to it as their 12th man. Opposing teams refer to the elevated volume created by Seattle fans at Qwest Field as noise pollution.

"It was loud," Bears quarterback Rex Grossman said after Sunday's 30-23 loss. "You can ask the tackles and the tight ends. The center and the guards can hear me. For whatever reason, they got us on some false starts."

Four times the Bears were penalized for false starts, raising the season total to 67 illegal-procedure flags dropped on the opposition at Qwest Field.

"It's loud at any road game," Grossman said. "The consistency of the loudness here was pretty impressive. In most places, it's pretty loud only in situations. But [Sunday] it seemed like every play was pretty loud."

Three false-start flags came in the fourth quarter, and two were on veteran tackle Fred Miller.

A key play was a fourth-and-1 at the Seattle 26-yard line with the Bears trailing 24-17 in the third quarter. Cedric Benson was stopped for no gain, and the Seahawks took over. Bears coach Lovie Smith insisted the crowd noise was not the overriding factor in the decision to call a simple running play.

"We're a running team in that situation," Smith said. "With fourth and less than a yard, if you say you're a running football team, you need to be able to get it."

Offensive coordinator Ron Turner agreed.

"In that fourth-down situation, we knew it was going to be loud, and we planned for it," he said. "We had some runs that we felt good about, like we always do. We have a couple of passes that we feel good about in that situation. Unfortunately, we didn't pick it up."

Cantilever roofs larger than 747s give Seahawks unique home-field edge

The Associated Press

SEATTLE: Joe Gibbs appreciates where his Redskins are as much as anyone.

Four consecutive wins to end the regular season sent Washington to the playoffs for the second time in three seasons.

The improbable, inspirational December surge, which followed the death of defensive leader Sean Taylor, also allowed Gibbs to rebound from what he calls the "lowest point" of his 16 years as a head coach. Gibbs called consecutive time outs at the end of a game five weeks ago, earning a 15-yard penalty and making Buffalo's winning field goal easier.

As for where the Redskins are going Saturday? Well, the Hall of Fame coach doesn't appreciate that so much.

"That's the good news," Gibbs said of the 10th playoff berth in his legendary career. "The bad news is we're going to Seattle. It's not a good place to go for a playoff game."

The Seahawks were 7-1 at home this season and are 34-7 at Qwest Field since Week 16 of the 2002 season. Only New England's 35-7 home mark is better during that span. Since 2001, Seattle is 42-14 at home, second only to the Patriots' 45-11.

That doesn't include the playoffs, in which the Seahawks are 3-1 at Qwest Field. That includes a 20-10 win over the Redskins in the teams' previous meeting, during the divisional playoffs in January 2006 on Seattle's way to the Super Bowl. That is Gibbs' only loss is six career games against the Seahawks.

"I think ... we went to Seattle not knowing," Washington running star Clinton Portis said. "That stadium was loud. The crowd was amazing."

It's not just that Seattle is starved for a title — though it is, not having felt a major men's professional sports championship since the 1979 SuperSonics won the NBA.

And, no, it's generally not the weather. Saturday is expected to bring — shocker! — steady rain and temperatures in the mid 40s during the game, with gusty winds that will make it feel like the mid 30s. But Seattle's FieldTurf, which is near real grass without the mud, and a high-tech draining system generally neutralize the effects of most weather.

Seattle's home-field advantage largely comes from Qwest Field's cantilever roofs along each sideline. Each is 760-feet long, the same as three 747 jets parked end-to-end. The roofs hang over each upper decks of each sidelines and cover 70 percent of the 67,000 seats. They are supposedly designed to keep fans semidry during the many rainy games.

But effectively, the roofs are noise traps that push the fans' roars back onto the playing surface, making players' ears ring and grandstands shake. The Seahawks love to point out that their "12th Man" of fans has caused 68 false-start penalties by opponents during the last three seasons. The New York Giants had 11 in one memorable mess of a loss at Seattle in 2005.

The Minnesota Vikings' home inside the Metrodome is second in the league in that span, having produced 57 opponents' false starts.

"I would think that an indoor facility would be louder than outdoor, but I hear that Seattle is louder," said Redskins quarterback Todd Collins, whose four consecutive wins included a key victory last month at Minnesota.

He was last inside Qwest Field in 2002, when he was a backup with the Kansas City Chiefs and the Seahawks were chronically mediocre.

At least one Redskins player — a native of Lacey, Wash., about an hour south of Seattle, no less — thinks the Seahawks' noise is artificially enhanced.

"That place had to be miked up because the last time we played there, it was ridiculous. We couldn't hear ourselves talk," running back Mike Sellers told The Washington Times this week. "For a stadium that small, it can't be that loud."

That made Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren — and presumably the 67,000 locals who hold tickets for Saturday's game — smile.

"Anyone who's been to a game here knows it's not artificial. It's all our fans," Holmgren said. "It's a learned activity for them. So you don't have to encourage them a lot.

"Now, I would suspect that if they think someone is accusing us of doing something like that, they might even come with a little more voice."

Holmgren grinned. About the only thing he didn't do was stamp his foot to emphasize his invitation to the fans.

This isn't the first time opponents have accused the Seahawks of piping in recorded noise. The Giants did after their false-start fiasco two seasons ago.

The NFL sent a memorandum early in the 2006 season, before the Giants played again in Seattle, about such complaints. A monitor from the league attended a game here that season to ensure there wasn't artificial amplification.

"It is quite an experience," Holmgren said of a Seattle home game. "The people that I have talked to this year — that I might bump into at a store or something, that went to the game for the first time — they can't believe it. They just cannot believe it.

"So, I suspect, if history tells us anything, that in the playoffs it will be noisy.

"It's one of the things when it is all said and done here for me I'll feel very, very good about: the fact that going to the game at Qwest Field is fun again. ... We need them Saturday, that's for sure."

You know what's loud? It's what's coming out of your bbq filled fat ass. Just accept the truth... bitch.

"Emotion and clutch play from backup quarterback Todd Collins carried the Redskins during their four-game winning streak to end the regular season. Emotion doesn't mean as much in the playoffs; every team plays on adrenaline. The Seahawks had the advantage this time, backed by the NFL's loudest crowd at Qwest Field.

Redskins fullback Mike Sellers grew up in the Seattle area and should have known better than to question the impact noise can have on an offense, even one stocked with veterans. The Redskins struggled to function, falling behind 13-0 even though Seattle's offense sputtered repeatedly on third down. Gibbs called it the loudest, toughest environment he has faced in close to four decades of coaching. His players agreed."

Qwest crowd plays havoc with Redskins' heads

By GREG JOHNS P-I REPORTER

Yes, 12th Man, you were definitely heard Saturday afternoon by the Washington Redskins.

All week, the Redskins insisted crowd noise wouldn't bother them. This was a team that had just won road games at Giants Stadium and the Metrodome, after all. The same team that beat the Eagles in Philadelphia and knocked off the Jets at the Meadowlands.

But though the Redskins suffered just one false-start penalty Saturday, they acknowledged that competing in the crucible of Qwest Field definitely played a part in their 35-14 loss to the Seahawks in the opening-round playoff game.

"The noise was a big factor, no question about it," said Washington quarterback Todd Collins, who was sacked three times and knocked to the ground 10 other times by Seattle's aggressive defense. "It was difficult even just calling a play in the huddle."

Redskins fullback Mike Sellers, who questioned whether Qwest's crowd noise was artificially enhanced earlier in the week, brushed off reporters after the game. But his teammates spoke volumes about the volume.

"It's a remarkable atmosphere for an outdoor stadium. It really is," said left guard Pete Kendall, a 12-year veteran who spent five seasons in Seattle from 1996-2000. "It reminds me of Arrowhead Stadium back in the day when the Chiefs were going 13-3 every year.

"It's that same type of advantage for them," he said. "The fans were great today. They made it difficult for us and that's what they're supposed to do."

Washington's linemen struggled in the early going, a factor coach Joe Gibbs attributed largely to the stadium's atmosphere. It wasn't until the Redskins went to a hurry-up offense and silent snap count that they finally began moving the ball better.

"This is an extremely tough place to come and play," Gibbs said. "It's a tough environment and I know it bothered us a lot early. When you are hesitant coming off the line of scrimmage, it is extremely hard to get a good, smooth operation going."

He got no argument from his big men in the trenches. Rookie right tackle Stephon Heyer declined to talk immediately after the game, saying he had a horrible headache. Eventually the 325-pounder out of Maryland recovered enough to acknowledge it was a long day going against Patrick Kerney and the Qwest crowd.

"It was definitely a factor," Heyer said. "It was so deafening a lot of times you could see people's mouths moving, but you didn't really hear anything.

"Usually the advantage of the offense is going off the cadence, but we were pretty much level when it came to knowing when to go because we're going off movement, just like they are. It was tough. It was definitely the loudest crowd I've ever been in and it affected certain moments, especially when we had third-and-whatever. It was a challenge."

Kerney was such a force on his side of the ball that the Redskins continually used Sellers or tight end Chris Cooley to help Heyer out. Kerney still got four hits on Collins, including one in the first half when he drove the quarterback hard into the ground.

"He was everything I'd heard and more," said Heyer.

As for the crowd, it was clearly more than the Redskins had heard before.

"There were times I couldn't hear Todd and I was standing right next to him," said Kendall. "At that point, you just trust you have the rhythm with the (silent count) cadence, which is kind of hard for me because I don't have much rhythm."

This coming from a guy who played his first five seasons in the league in Seattle before Qwest Field opened.

"The Kingdome was pretty raucous as well," Kendall said. "Unfortunately when I was here, we didn't give them as many opportunities as they've had here in the recent past. It's a credit to Mike (Holmgren) and his staff and the organization. They got things turned around."

In the end, the Seahawks achieved what they'd fought for all season. They earned the homefield advantage by winning the NFC West and reaped the reward with Saturday's victory over a team whose emotional wave finally ran out after traveling across the country to face both the Seahawks and their 68,297 fans.

"We knew this was a loud place coming in," said Redskins running back Clinton Portis, held to 52 yards on 20 carries. "You can't take anything away from their fans or this stadium. This is a great stadium. They had home field.

"That's what you fight to get for the playoffs," Portis said, "so you can have that effect."

For the 12th Man, mission accomplished.

It has been so loud that even Brady has commented on it (and NO it is not 'pumped in' sound). There is no doubt about it - Qwest Field is the toughest and loudest stadium to play in. Media coverage rarely even mentioned the individual Seahawk's players coming into our home playoff game, they simply talked about the 12th Man and how diffult it would be for the Redskins to come into Seattle and get a win. The NFL will want to display Qwest Field and its Seahawks fans all over primetime TV in the 2008 season - and it will be all about the 12th Man. Lets see how many nationally televised games Arrowhead Stadium gets...the torch has already passed to the Great Northwest when it comes to the loudest stadium in the league.

Well being a non-bias fan of football and have actually been to meaningful at both Arrowhead stadium and Qwest field, I would say its really too tough to call with just by ear, both places are incredibly loud, When I went to a Playoff game at Arrowhead it was an unbelievable atmosphere from the tailgating ( best I have experienced ) to the game. The crowd is very loud. After going to the 2005 NFC Championship game at Qwest field, There is no way I could say Arrowhead is louder than Qwest. Cant say Qwest is louder than Arrowhead, especially given the amount of time between games at both places. To be perfectly honest I would say they would be tied for first. Qwest Field did set a record for decibels at the 05 Championship game for an NFL Stadium, but I dont know when they started keeping track of that and if Arrowhead has been measured before. So if it has, then "technically" Qwest is louder, but without a decibel meter you could not tell, both are very very very loud.

Arrowhead gets rowdier, louder, drunker, and the results don't lie...I have no doubt in my mind that Arrowhead Stadium is the loudest stadium in the NFL. Of course Soldier Field and Lambeau have the weather, but the fans don't cause that! Whats more abnoxios than to listen to 75,000 drunk, crazy rednecks yelling as loud as they can at you while your trying to play a game of football. Plus the stadiums 35 years old! LMAO you guys have argued over this for nearly a year!! And all you needed to do was a simple little G00gle search to find the answers between the Qwest and Arrowhead stadium debate. Here are my findings.

“Arrowhead has long held a reputation for being one of the loudest outdoor stadiums in the NFL due to the exuberance of the Chiefs' fans.[3][4][5] Fan generated noise was once measured at 116 decibels[6] by the Acoustical Design Group of Mission, KS.”

“During the 2005 NFC Championship Game against the Carolina Panthers, the decibel level recorded by Fox Sports telecast producers reached 137db”'

Thank you G00gle

Teaxs A&M is home to the 12th man. Seahawks fans need a sound manufacturing stadium to even be close to ArrowHead,it takes a new stadium and a superbowl appearance for you guys to even show up and be passionate. Where were all you SeaHawk fans when you used to play in the KingDome and were consistently last in the AFC West? Chiefs fans have had to deal with an organization and general manager that is more worried about making money than winning. We give everything to the Chiefs and get minimal results back. Yet week after week we sell out every game cause we are the most dedicated, die hard, passionate, tail gate lovin, loud ass fans you will ever meet. I respect Seattle and I respect your fans, your loud as hell, but if you give me ArrowHead Stadium at night in a playoff game at full force vs Qwest at night in a playoff game at full force, conventional wisdom says go with ArrowHead Stadium.. But if you read my earlier post I did compare Playoff games. Arrowhead stadium was the loudest it had ever been was in the 2003 playoffs. 2 years later Seattle broke that record. Decibels measuring hasn't changed from 2003 to 2005.

Note that all of these examples yield dimensionless answers in dB because they are relative ratios expressed in decibels.

To calculate the ratio of 1 kW (one kilowatt, or 1000 watts) to 1 W in decibels, use the formula

To calculate the ratio of 1 mW (one milliwatt) to 10 W in decibels, use the formula

To find the power ratio corresponding to a 3 dB change in level, use the formula

Ok, Qwest Field had a great decibel reading in ONE of their games... Reliant Stadium had an even louder Decibel reading, IT WAS THE LOUDEST EVER,and why? BECAUSE IT WAS THEIR FIRST TOUCHDOWN IN THEIR FRANCHISE.EVER! since then it has been crap. I was at a Viking-Seahawk game and 20% of the stadium was filled with viking fans. If u go to arrowhead the only raider/bronco/charger/anybody fans are in the noseblead. That stadium was rockin all 9 times I've been, (i live in Colorado) . No matter win or lose KC has the stadium and team every other team dreams of having

One game doesn't build a reputation...if seattle wants to get the recognition Arrowhead has had since and before seattle was in the AFC West then they better sell out like the next 30 seasons and get to the super bowl to get those sell outs.

KC hasn't been to a Super Bowl in...A LONG TIME?! But, the fans still believe and soon their patience and support will be paid off....

JUST THINK HOW LOUD ARROWHEAD WOULD BE IF THE CHIEFS BECAME GOOD AGAIN?!?!?! JUST LIKE THE 90'S BABY!

The Chiefs have to fundementally change, until the numbers in the pocketbook mean less than the numbers on the field youll get the same result. Its all about people covering there own butts just to keep their job and not get fired. Where is our owner? Somewhere off the shores of who knows where not worried at all about his team just waiting for the revenues to stream in when he has the worst team in professional football. Its just frustrating when the fans care more about winning than the organization does, but thats how its always been in KC..

I'm from Indy. Lucas Oil Stadium is terrible. Why couldn't it be designed to be more like Seattle's new digs? The Seahawks did it right by assuring that their new stadium generated a huge amount of noise. The Colts new home is so damn quiet you can hear the other team's audibles. Huge mistake. And the Chiefs screwed up by not dealing Gonzalez.

qwest field may have takin over in terms of loudest stadium in the NFL but experience and advantage still lie heavily favored in the way of KC. I have traveled to many stadiums to watch my chiefs play including to seattle( remember when we used to whoop that ass with DT 7 sacks ring a bell) I have never been to qwest but even in the old days seattle could make noise but when yall were losing there wasnt packed houses. however its the attitude of the town and the love for the team that seperates KC from all. Chiefs fans haven't seen a playoff win since god knows when but they continue to come out and do thier part. i love a loud and rowdy enviroment and here in kansas city i find it.

there were some nice false start stats thrown out by seattle fans but remember when we sacked your qb 9 times in one game. 7 by one player. seattle offensive lineman had to start on the ball movement that day because they could not hear a snap count in arrowhead. this is a routine problem for teams here and why i love it here so much. we dont need to win a superbowl to fly our flag our dress up for our game. sure there will be teams coming off a superbowl win ( or in the seahawks case an appearence) that come out and get rowdy but here it will always be that way. its not just a game to these people its damn near a lifestyle. 6th smallest market in the league but 150 consecutive sell outs and season ticket holders in 49 states now thats saying something. so thorw out all the decibel ratings you want coming off a superbowl appearence when your team hits hard times where will those ratings go ?

Anyone have the max decibel readings from both Qwest and Arrowhead stadium recently?

Hopefully anyone would think that noise would cause a stadium to be defined "tough" (which was also the original question on this page)

What else would? Fan loyalty has nothing to do with a stadium being difficult to play in.

Besides decibel readings (hopefully people in Kansas City know what that is), you would think false start penalties committed by the opposing teams would be a direct correlation to noise levels at the stadium and hence the stadium's toughness.

So with all this being said, what is both the max decibel reading and false start count since the 2005 NFL stadium at both stadiums?

Someone should do the research and come back here with a more rational argument. Calling fans at Qwest Field in Seattle "bird shitters" is at minimum childish.

Both argued stadiums both have loyal fans, many have been ticket holders since the day teams began. Tickets get passed down through families. It's obvious that both teams have fans that stay through and true even during tough seasons.

To be quite honest, I haven't been to Arrowhead. I've talked to relatives who have though. They say its a great stadium, and I believe them. But lets turn the tables AF# 62, have you ever been to Qwest Field? ... highly doubt it, which would also explain why you don't know a thing about the place along with the great tailgating around the stadium. Don't get me wrong, Arrowhead has a great home field advantage, you repeated yourself many times. However, how can you not take a honest look at this place? Qwest Field offers a legitimate arguement of being the toughest NFL stadium to play in.

I even have direct quotes from the Wild Card playoff weekend from players such as Kurt Warner.

"Childress in Minnesota said in his mind Seattle is still the loudest in the NFL and is an unreal environment to play in.

Kurt Warner in his post game interview said the fans in Glendale were loud but he still thinks Seattle is the loudest stadium he has ever played in."
