Top 10 Running Backs

Here are the Top 10 running backs according to CBS Sportsline. While I have endorsed Reggie Bush as the best NFL prospect around since personally watching him and the USC Trojans dismantle my Sooners in the Orange Bowl in 2005 I do wonder if LenDale White is the second best prospect out there.

I’m not trying to discredit White in any way because I think he has a great future in the NFL but if you are a GM would you take him next after Bush? I think I would take Lawrence Maroney or Maurice Drew over him. Who would you take?

TOP 10 RUNNING BACKS FOR THE 2006 NFL DRAFT

  1. Reggie Bush USC
  2. LenDale White USC
  3. Lawrence Maroney Minnesota
  4. Maurice Drew UCLA
  5. DeAngelo Williams Memphis
  6. Gerald Riggs Jr. Tennessee
  7. Leon Washington Florida State
  8. Joseph Addai LSU
  9. Taurean Henderson Texas Tech
  10. Mike Bell Arizona

I'm a White skeptic. NFL running backs need to be bruisers or adept in the passing game. White may be the former, but his lack of pass catching and removal on passing downs suggests the latter isn't his forte. Can he pass block? Is he an acceptable outlet receiver? I'm going with Williams. He suffered from small-school bias and still is always mentioned.

I don't like this list at all. I think it is more likely Bush, Maroney, White, Williams, Addai, Drew, Riggs, Bell, Washington, Henderson.

"Lack of pass catching" - I'll admit, I don't know is exact statistics, but I believe Reggie Bush caught a considerable number of passes and turned many of them into big plays, perhaps a higher percentage than of his runs. He may not be a full-time third down back but I bet he'll be a part of Gary Kubiak's passing attach on first and second down.

Reggie had 95 receptions for 1301 yards and 13 touchdowns in his 3 years at USC .. admittedly he didn't have to pick up too many blitzes due to USC's solid line.

DeAngelo Williams was an absolute beast at Memphis. He can do it all. He tore up teams for 200 yards every week. Williams is the 2nd best in my opinion to Bush

I'm not sold on Reggie Bush as the best running back prospect for the NFL. Don't get me wrong, he was jaw-droppingly incredible in college and nobody can deny his athleticism. But, the guy never carried a full running back load, and he's small. I wonder how he'll stand up to the rigors of the beating an NFL running back takes. I said all season that I think White will find more success in the NFL than Bush will as a running back, and I stand by that opinion.
