Tony Dungy has been appointed to the "President's Council on Service and Civic Participation." Part of the USA Freedom Corps, the President's Council "was established to recognize the important contributions Americans of all ages are making within their communities through service and civic engagement" (from the USA Freedom Corps Website). Dungy is almost as well-known for his personal beliefs as he is for his coaching. He not only has a Super Bowl Ring and a best-selling book, but can now add this council to the list of causes he supports which includes Big Brothers/Big Sisters and the Boys and Girls Clubs.
Dungy joins the following people on the council: Jean Case (Chair), Michael W. Smith (Vice Chair), Stephen Baldwin, Ray Chambers, Jerry Colangelo, Evern Cooper Epps, Myrka Dellanos, Hillary Duff, Sara Evans, Angela Baraquio Grey, Patricia Heaton, Kasey Kahne, Art Linkletter, Mary Jo Myers, Michelle Nunn, Kelly Perdew, Cokie Roberts, Wendy Spencer, Roxanne Spillett, Hope Taft, Chuck Turlinski, Janine Turner, Danny Wuerffel and Mark Yudof.
This is certainly a nice honor for Dungy, though I don't know how much real work or good he'll do in the role (or any of them, for that matter). He has said it won't affect his coaching schedule at all, so it is probably more ceremonial than substantive.
