[edit] Biography

Born on August 13, 1940 in Lincoln County, North Carolina, Tony Cloninger (Tony Lee Cloninger) played for the Milwaukee Braves, Atlanta Braves, Cincinnati Reds and St. Louis Cardinals over the course of his 12 year career. Cloninger broke into the bigs on June 15, 1961 with the Milwaukee Braves, and put up a 5.25 ERA in 84 innings pitched in 1961, his rookie year.

Cloninger is perhaps most famous for being one of only twelve players in Major League Baseball history to hit two grand slams in one game -- and the only pitcher to accomplish the feat. He did it on July 3, 1966 against the San Francisco Giants at Candlestick Park in a game won by the Braves 17-3. He also had an RBI single in the game, giving him a total of nine RBI.

Most people believe that Tony Cloninger's best season was 1965, when he posted a 3.29 ERA, won 24 games and struck out 211 batters.
