Tomlinson versus Jackson

Of course, your all going to say L.T., I already see it coming, but for those of you that are going to say you would rather have Ladainian Tomlinson, than Steven Jackson, give me a few minutes of your time, and I may be able to make you change your mind.  Tomlinson may have had way more rushing yards than Jackson, but Jackson is a much better all-around player.  Tomlinson may be able to run around you, brake your ankles, but so can Jackson, and he can also run through you, something that Tomlinson can't say.  L.T. is a small, quick back at 5'10 221 pounds, Jackson is a big powerful, and quick back at 6'2 231 pounds.  Jackson caught 90 balls in 2006 for 806 receiving yards, and ran the ball 346 times for 1,528 yards on the ground for 16 total TD's (13 rushing, 3 receiving).  Ladainian ran for more rushing yards (1,815 yards) on 348 carries, and had 56 catches for 506 yards for 31 total TD's (28 rushing, 3 receiving).  I must say that I, myself, would rather have L.T., but Jackson is a spectacular back, and is the best all-around back in the NFL without a doubt.  This year look for Jackson to get just as many touches as '06, but for more yards than '06, maybe 1,800 on the ground and possibly 1,000 through the air, that is pushing it, but I think by next year Jackson will be ahead of L.T. as the best back in the NFL.

STATS

Last 2 years

Ladainian Tomlinson

2005: 339 ATT, 1,462 Rush Yds, 18 TD, 51 Rec, 370 Yds, 2 TD 2006: 348 ATT, 1,815 Rush Yds, 28 TD, 56 Rec, 508 Yds, 3 TD

Steven Jackson 2005: 254 ATT, 1,046 Rush Yds, 8 TD, 43 Rec, 320 Yds, 2 TD 2006: 346 ATT, 1,528 Rush Yds, 13 TD, 90 Rec, 906 Yds, 3 TD

2008 better back: Tomlinson

2009 better back: Jackson

The difference between LT and SJ is the supporting cast. Tomlinson IS, bar none, the feature piece of the San Diego offense. Antonio Gates is superb, and Rivers can throw the ball, but they lack WR threats. Jackson has Marc Bulger, and receiving targets almost as deep as New England: Isaac Bruce, Torry Holt, Drew Bennett, Randy McMichael. Add that the Rams love to throw the ball and it makes for a bit tougher for SJ to get his yards. Tomlinson is still the better back for the near future.

Isn't Jackson getting up there in age? IF he is not better than LT now, I don't think he will ever be better.

I'd still worry about Brian Leonard from Rutgers. He looks like Mike Alstott only he isn't a full time fullback anymore.

LT gets all the love because his team was so great last year. Jackson racked up the fifth most total yards in NFL history last year. He's an absolute beast. LT is still the best football player in the world, but Jackson could be the next Marshall Faulk. They are both still very young and entering their primes. They'll be fun to watch for the next five years.

One other thing, yes, Jackson racked up 2334 yards from scrimmage, but let's not overlook Tomlinson finished just 11 yards behind him, and also has the #2 season of all time with 2370 in 2003.

I think LT will continue to put up the better numbers because the offense revolves around him. Jackson will be a powerhouse for many years because, he's got fresh legs and he's big and strong but I don't think he will put up the big numbers like LT because the Rams like to spread the ball all over the field.

I love LT, but he's gotta get out of his prime someday. Age makes a difference when you're a running back. I'll say Jackson will be better than him in... 2010.

I'm sorry, I have to completely disagree. I think Tomlinson is not only the better all around back, but I think He will at the end of his career be compared to none other than Barry Sanders. LT has the size to pound the ball if it was his style (Jackson has 4" but only 10 pounds on him). I also think LTs career will last longer than Jacksons because of their running styles. All of my friends and now probably all of you guys will chew me out for saying this, but, I think LT is going to shatter the record books if he stays healthy.

I completely agree. If he plays for 10 more years (he's 27, not impossible) and averages 1000+ he shatters Emmitt Smith's rushing yards record. He could go down as the best ever to play.

I love Jackson mainly because Tomlinson is a target on a team with no experienced wide recievers or a quarterback. Jackson has great WR's and a great QB to keep defenses off of him. The way Tomlinson has been running, he's bound to get injured one of these days.

Tomlinson is a durable back, as evidenced by his missing only one game in his career. We are not talking an injury prone guy like a Westbrook or a guy dogged by nagging injuries. LT is a guy who no matter how banged up he is, will be there on Sundays.

This is going to be Jackson's breakout season. 1800 yards, 20+ TD's. The guy's a monster.
