Today was Racing Day

So my wife and I have a vacation day today, and we were deciding what to do. Did the Ho, Ho, Ho, Christmas decorations yesterday and helping my mother-in-law move tomorrow. (I tried to convince the moving guys into losing her instead of the furniture, not much luck yet).

We have a five year old daughter who loves horses, like any other kid I guess. So we take her to Turf Paradise, the thoroughbred track in Phoenix. Personally, I rather enjoy betting the nags, having spent time at Penn National, Pimlico, Barrington, Belmont and Yonkers to name a few. My wife and I went to Penn National once while we were still dating, so its been almost 20 years for her, but when you have kids you bite the bullet and do things you normally wouldn't even consider. (Like seeing The Wiggles...twice). Had to see my therapist after that one, good thing he makes house calls. Dr. Jack Daniels if anyone needs a reference.

So we get inside between the fourth and fifth races, (10 carder today), pick up a form and find a seat. We were probably the only one's there with jobs, including the people who work there.

I give my daughter (her name is Kelsey....Kelsdad, get it?) the form and she looks at it and hands it back to me, with the #4 and #5 horses circled. Heck yeah, I'll look a gift horse in the mouth, so I go up to the window and box an exacta with both horses, and sure as shit, the race finishes 4-5, and pays $116.20!!

My wife wants to get in on the fun now, she plays a trifecta on Kelsey's birthday, 3-1-9. I give Kelsey the form, she circles the 7 horse, I go back to the window and play the tri and also a split box, (combo's everything for $8). What do you think happens? Damn straight, the race ends 1-3-7-9, the 1-3 box pays $57.80 and the seven paid $8.40 on a show.

We stayed the last four races and didn't do much, a couple show payoffs for less than $10, but I now have a new source of income....a five year old horse handicapper! And they don't know it yet, but we're going back on Saturday.
