Today's Athletes, No Respect!

The latest act of stupidity by Big Ben Roethlisberger has prompted me to come flat out and say today's athletes have no respect at all. Not for the game that they play, and not for the lives that they have been blessed with.

The great Roethlisberger was not wearing a helmet when this unfortunate incident occurred. And what was this genius's reason? That it is not against the law. How about the fact that maybe you won't get hurt if you wear it, Einstein? But no, I am big tough football player, and these things don't happen to me. Same thing with Kellen Winslow Jr.. Another ididot that thinks he is invincible, and doesn't need a helmet. Realize that you are a human being, blessed with the talent to play a game, and don't ruin it by your lack of respect for your game.

The steroids issue is the same thing. Baseball players think they are larger than life, can put anything in their bodies, and nothing will happen to them. They are human beings, just like us, and should consider themselves blessed for having the talent they have, instead of acting like life owes them something because they are big bad athletes. You never hear stories of guys like Willie Mays acting stupid and reckless. That is because they had respect for themselves, and respect for the game.

Pro athletes far and wide, here me now. You have been blessed with a great talent. The talent to play games that kids play the world over. Stop acting like it's your God given right to be pro athletes, it's a privledge that you should respect and honor daily. Then maybe the kids that watch you will actually have something to look up to.

There is a big difference between winslow and big ben. I'm not sure of all the events, but The way I understand it, Winslow was being foolish and messing around (Was he also wearing a helmet, I know the knee injury was the issue) whereas ben was just riding and got into an accident (I also do not believe it was his fault, don't know though) I know I would ride w/ a helmet, but I think I would still ride a bike if I wanted. None the less, the reason the law was repealed in PA was freedom of choice. Next stop Marijuana!

Your right, Ben wasn't being foolish. It's perfectly normal to go riding with an expired permit.

I agree, there was a difference in their accidents. But not wearing a helmet is still awfully stupid. Winslow was messing around, but is riding without a helmet any less stupid than the stupid behavior of popping wheelies, and whatnot? I don't think it is, unless the person doing wheelies is also not wearing a helmet. That makes it a little more stupid. But there are lots of dumb things you could do that are not against the law. I could have unprotected sex with a girl that has genital warts, but then, that doesn't seem like the smart move, does it? Being an adult means making adult decisions on your own. Big Ben shouldn't need the law to tell he HAS to wear a helmet when his parents and coach already told him it would be the smart thing to do. Being an adult means doing what's smart without someone FORCING you to.

I don't think there is any difference. They were both doing something risky. Also, I was wondering how the media would react to the Roethlisberger thing in comparison to Winslow's incident last year. It's been as expected, mostly sympathy from what I've read for Ben whereas Kellen was scorned for his incident last year. Even though Ben was breaking the law (expired permit), a well liked player will receive sympathy for doing something pretty similar to a controversial player.....

He was given the choice...

I agree with you ASwaff, but its not like no one told him not to.

I just learned about the permit thing. Listen, I agree there, its illegal and he was wrong. But we shouldn't chastise the guy for a decision he as the right to make. We can chastise him for making a poor decision however...

Today's athletes are no worse than yesterday's. Mantle drank, Ruth drank, Josh Gibson drugged it up, Jack Johnson was a druggy, etc., etc.
