Monday brought some interesting news for your Dallas Stars.
-Along with Mike Smith selected as the Goaltender of the Week (They call it the Third Star of the Week on NHL.com), GM Doug Armstrong made a trade with the Phoenix Coyotes.
-Going to Phoenix is Mathias Tjarnqvist and the Stars 2007 1st Round Draft Pick
-Headed To Dallas is Ladislav Nagy, a Slovakian Left Winger who left a team where he led the Coyotes as the team's leading scorer and assist man, recording 33 assists and 41 points.
So, what does this trade mean for the trade?
First, Tjarnqvist was constantly getting scratched this season, so he should find a good home with the Coyotes
Second, the Stars would have received a draft pick between 18 and 30, depending on how they finish this season. Right now, they are sixth in the conference, marking that they wouldn't receive any help from the NHL Draft Lottery. Thus, getting a player like Nagy is a steal
Third, The Stars are only on the hook for $1 million of his $3 million dollar salary, so they won't take on a huge cap hit, although, their cap room after this trade has been compromised to the point where the Stars could only make a trade if the players coming and going made the same money.
Four, this is a skilled winger who can make plays. In his career against the Stars, Nagy has scored 4 goals and 17 assists for 21 points in 27 games played, including three game winning goals his now current team.
-Now, I know the Stars scored seven goals versus Colorado, but don't count on every team Dallas plays to have goaltenders that play as bad as the Av's goaltenders were on Sunday.
Remember, the Stars could only muster one goal versus Anaheim and those games are typical of those played in April, May and June. If you look at the Goals For Category on the NHL Stats Page on NHL.com, the Stars rank Tied For 23rd in Goals Scored Per Game, tied with Phoenix in this category.
The difference between the Coyotes and the Stars is that the Stars are more defensive minded, ranking 4th in the NHL in Goals Against Per Game while the Coyotes are ranked 26th.
Thus, acquiring Nagy helps the Offense and sends a message to the other skilled players on this team that the GM will not tolerate low scoring games after acquiring a winger who can help other players score goals and can score goals as well.
Negatives for Nagy include taking too many penalties (48 PIM ranks 8th on the Stars if you count his current PHX totals) and this could be a rent a player situation as he is an unrestricted free agent this summer.
The Coyotes and Nagy could not come up with a long term deal to keep him in Phoenix, meaning he was expendable as the Coyotes are a team that will not qualify for the Playoffs. So, the likelihood that he could be a short term player for the Stars exists.
Yet, the trade does give the team a shot in the arm, so I approve this deal. I saw enough games in December and January where this team only scored one goal to see that this team needed some offensive punch. Nagy helps them out in that category.
