Tim Duncan Ejected for Laughing

I respect officials in any sport – referees, umpires, judges – for doing their job day in and day out in the face of increasingly demanding and disrespectful fans. This happens on any level of play; I umpire slow-pitch co-ed recreational softball in the summer and am blown away by the lack of respect. The complaints and hostility even come from coaches who should be helping to create a fair and positive competition.

Basketball referees, especially, have been getting a lot of heat lately with the whirlwind intensity of March Madness. I’m usually quick to defend officials, but just a few days ago there was an incident that was controversial. Tim Duncan got tossed from a game for laughing on the bench. For Laughing. On the bench.

Last month I blogged about an article by John Feinstein in the Washington Post that suggested officials should be made available for post-game interviews. His argument centered on the fact that officials don’t have to defend their bad calls, and because they are paid professionals they should have to walk up to microphone just as the other paid professionals do.

While, overall, I don’t believe referees having to defend their calls is a good idea, I would be very interested to hear what the referee in this case has to say for himself. Do you think officials should be subject to a post-game press conference?

He laughed because Bob Horry just got done saying that "if Crawford wore a turtleneck, he'd look like roll-on deodorant"

The ejection of Duncan was horrible. Im not one to buy into feuds and rivalries between refs and players, but I cannot help but think there there was something going on there. Not to mention that the Spurs went 12 for 14 coming down the stretch of the season. Those two loses came during Joey Crawford reffed games. Not to mention check the file for Game 6 NBA Western Conference Finals last year and the two shadow fouls Duncan picked up via Joey Crawford.

I read that Feinstein article myself and I agree with him. Reffed need to be held accountable for their actions. That means they should have their own lil press conferences where they can be questioned and have to fess up for why they called a game that way.

I am glad that Crawford is out for a while and maybe now he can think about what he has done.

he's not "out for a while", he's done. He "challenged" Duncan to a fistfight (another reason Tim was laughing) and The REAL feud is between Crawford and Mr Stern... Crawford was involved with the airline ticket exchange fiasco a couple years ago and also spoke loudly about favoritism of other refs (mostly Dick Bavetta). Crawford even said after meeting with Stern that he'd STILL toss Duncan again if he could do it all over... d-u-n, done. Good Riddance! At least Steve Javey learned HIS lesson. He used to be the worst of the "TV face time" refs but backed off to become a useful ref and then Crawford stepped up.

True, the fact that Crawford was unwilling to step down, or apologize for his actions, couldnt have helped him.

Joey Crawford was one of the better referees. However, he clearly had a personal vendetta against Tim Duncan from past games. A message had to be sent because that was one of the worst ejections I have ever seen. Officiating has gone to hell in the NBA and with the playoffs coming up, i'm more than concerned. Joey Crawford needed a vacation, now he'll be retired.
