Tiki Got Jobbed

10
Vote

Ok I realize that this is late, and was probably already talked about, but since we just put in the NFL stats, something jumped out at me again.

Tiki Barber got so screwed out of the MVP, it's not even funny. If you watched any Giants game this year, its quite obvious that Tiki lead the team to the playoffs. While Eli Manning and the Giant's Defense were on a rollercoaster of effectiveness all season, Tiki was the rock each week, inexeplicably breaking tackles and team rushing records.

Shaun Alexander won this year's MVP, and yes his TD total was amazing blah blah blah. But (1) his line is amazing, and he gets all the goal line carries. (2) Tiki lost all the goal carries to rookie Brandon Jacobs (3) The Seahawks have a crappy division.

Here are the two players stats:

Tiki Barber

<stats> name=Tiki Barber years=2005 sport=NFL columns=G,RuAtt,RuYD,RuAvg,RuTD,Rec,RecYd,RecAvg,RecTD </stats>

Shaun Alexander

<stats> name=Shaun Alexander years=2005 sport=NFL columns=G,RuAtt,RuYD,RuAvg,RuTD,Rec,RecYd,RecAvg,RecTD </stats>

Aside from Ax's redonkulous TD total, Tiki was pretty comparable (and even kicked butt getting 500 receiving yards!)

Take away Tiki, the Giants were probably bottom feeders. All hail Tiki! King of the Most Underrated Football Players ever.

concur. Tiki also had two huge games (Redskins and especially home against Chiefs) that the Giants would not have won without Tiki. If they lost against the Chiefs the whole playoff landscape in the NFL East would have changed.

According to FootballOutsiders, Alexander was #2 in DPAR (behind Larry Johnson). Tiki was #5 (also behind Edge and Rudi Johnson), if you include only rushing. Their raw #s are 57.8 for Alexander and 47.4 for Tiki.

Of course, this value includes the offensive line. It's hard to isolate that. (DPAR does factor in strength of schedule.)

It also does not include receiving. Tiki is he's #1 amongst RB, with 17.8 points. That means combined, Tiki's total is 7.4 points above Alexander's rush-only total. Alexander had a -1.5 receiving DPAR, further increasing the spread.

Tiki is an under rated goal line and short yardage back. Because he is small, no one wants to give him the ball, yet he very good at getting in behind a blocker, spinning out at the last moment and diving forward for a yard. The main reason I think he is not used is because the Giants don't want him getting injured. If he got Brandon Jacobs' goal line carries I think he would also have his 7 TD's (or at least the ones not picked up during garbage time), giving him 14-16 TD's on the season.

What a crock of sh**. If Tiki is so good why did he lose the goal line carries? His stats do jump put when you get to recieving yards but Alexanders till derserves it. Without Tiki the Giants still miss playoffs, as in they didn't get ther with him. Withou Alexander, the Seahawks don't get into the playoffs, let alone the SB. I agree that Seatles line is awesome, but he is still a good back. He has been consistently good for the past 4-5 years. To say that Tiki got jobbed just shows that you don't seen anything in any other color but blue.

AF is right, why risk giving him the ball only to get pummeled at the goal line, when you have a big brusing back in Jacobs? It has nothing to do with being good or not (getting goal line carries)

Wow, what a great year by Tiki, he didn't fumble it 12 times this year like he does every other year. And he has such a great smile. He should have been MVP for sure. Forget the fact that he isn't even the most valuable player on his team, that would be Kareem McKenzie. Get real. He didn't get jobbed, he's just doing his job, and it wasn't even such a good job.

If just doing a RBs job is getting 1860 rush yards at 5.2 yards a carry, with 500 receiving yards, i guess 99% of other RBs aren't doing their job!

Tiki definitely deserved the MVP award this year. The bottom line is that he leaves it all out there in every game and continuously improves his own game. His numbers do not vary too much between a win or a loss, he makes himself an option on nearly every play, and when he doesn't it is because he is picking up a blitz. He cured his fumbling problem by changing the way he carried the ball, and after breaking the Giants single-season rushing record last year, he bulked up in the offseason to come back and break it again. Staying in to pick up a blitz says a lot about what player thinks of himself, his QB, and his team . . . you saw the superbowl.

Pean, I didnt say he didnt have a great year, it just wasn't an MVP year. Maybe he should stop going on every sports show trying to pump himself up, and go to the gym or practice not fumbling. Anyway, their best player is still Jason Sehorn
