Tigers offseason

Although I have no problem keeping Pudge on board, but don't you think it would have been wise to let Vance and Rabelo split the catching duties, and put that 13 mil towards Torii Hunter to play left?? I think he would have been receptive to the idea of playing left if the money was right, because he is getting older (32) and we have a superstar in the making in Curtis Granderson. If not Hunter, possibly allocating that money to give A-Rod a chance to move back to ss and hit between Magglio and Guillen? How sick would that be? Also, we need to bring Kenny back for one more year. Obviously we have Bondo Verlander and Nate-dogg, but who besides Jurrjens would you trust in the rotation? Possibly Miller, but I'd like for him to work on his breaking stuff for a year in the minors. Give me your thoughts.

I dont know how deep the tigers pockets are, but i think they made a smart move since it was only a one-year binding deal, why not keep pudge around? i think a smart move would be to keep sean casey around as part time dh/1b/clubhouse mentor who can start or come off the bench to pinch hit in coming years, justin verlander, joel zumaya, and curtis granderson will be in line for hefty raises, and sheffield is on the hook for 2 more years i think their best plan of action would be to let miller hone his stuff in the majors (what they did with robertson and bonderman) and that certainly worked out

Sounds like a good plan to me.

Hmmmmmm. You want a 35 year old catcher coming off Tommy John to play half the time? Pudge coming back was a necessity, not an option. Kenny Rogers coming back is an option, and not a viable one. The Tigers are one of a few teams who have no worries on pitching going into next season, other than possibly Zumaya.

We had no worries coming into this season too right? I would keep vance wilson around to teach rabelo, but the difference between .280 with no power and .260 with no power doesnt sound like a 13 million dollar difference. As far as miller and rogers, even if miller improves enough to start at the major league level, nate-dogg was terrible for long stretches this year, and starting pitching depth is the most valuable thing in the game, as tiger fans saw this year. I would feel alot better if the "Whirling Durbin" was in the pen, not the rotation.

Mlems31 has it right. Pudge may still be somewhere between good and great defensively but his bat has lost something. Lets face the fact. Pudge was one of the few batters that opposing pitchers could pitch to and he didn't come through. .281 batting average, .294 OBP, .420 SLG (lowest SLG since 1993). If you don't think we have pitching issues your just wrong. Zumaya never looked good coming off injury, Bondo was fatigued late, Nate continues to struggle in the close game, granted he often gets little run support. Jones makes every save opportunity a hold your breath moment. This team has holes. 13 million goes a long way when you spend it right.

The one thing that everyone is forgetting about Pudge is his leadership skills. Both Wilson and Rabelo are not ready to take on the catching duties full-time.Maybe after next year.Pudge has been and always will be known for his defensive abilities, would you steal on him?
