Tigers Snag Miller with the Sixth Pick

7
Vote

The Detroit Tigers snagged LHP Andrew Miller with the sixth overall pick in the 2006 MLB Draft. Miller was the consensus Number 1 pick. The Kansas City Royals did not select Miller because of reported bonus demands similar to those of Mike Pelfrey. Miller is thought to be close to major league ready and could debut for the Tigers are early as next season.

Verlander, Bonderman, Robertson, and Miller. Not a bad starting four with a decent bullpen to boot.

It only seems to get better for us Tiger fans. Oh, and don't forget about Maroth when he gets healty again.

I am worried about Maroth's injury. Bone chips, elbow, sounds like a long recovery . . . I guess he is a servicable 5th starter though.

I like the way Granderson is developing. Shelton seems like a decent professional hitter. My only worry about Detroit for next year is that their offense will devolve before their pitching is Playoff/World Series ready? Do they have any other offensive talent in their minors?

their pitching can't be too far off. Bonderman is coming into form, Rogers will be good for atleast another year, and Verlander looks to be only a year or two away from an ace. Robertson and Maroth are both wildcards, but are somewhat solid. Perhaps they could pick up another veteran via trade or free agency in the off season. As far as offense, you're dead on with Granderson. He looks like he could be a solid lead off guy for years to come. Shelton too has been solid. Sure he's had his struggles, but we all knew he wouldn't keep up his early season home run pace. As far as the offense peaking too early, the offense is considerably young, thats the good news. But as far as offensive talent in the minors, not really. Sure they have the speedy Nook Logan, but all he can do is steal it seems. Thats the one thing this years Tiger team worries me about: Team Speed. Granderson is their only real threat as far as speed is concerned, and even he isn't that great of a base stealer. I also read this in SI this past week. Detroit became the 45th team in MLB history to win 35 of its first 50 games...all but 6 made the playoffs. I like our chances!

Also, dont forget about Magglio Ordonez...he's finally earning that big contract he signed a couple years ago.

I think it makes sense, given Detroit's park to go with pitching and speed. Next year, Verlander and Bonderman should solidify into a top tier 1-2 punch. The offensive pieces will all be 1 year older, and many of the best pieces are injury risks. Magglio, Guillen, and non-roided Pudge.
