Here we are Thursday…The official start to the weekend. Thursdays are meant for kickoff the football weekend, dedicated to all of us who’ve worked our asses off the first half of the week…Yeah, it’s time to let the hair down, lean back & have a couple brews with the twins over at the bar. In case you Dirt Road Pavers out there didn’t know this, Thursdays are the official golf day as well (during the week that is). What better way to get the weekend started than a round of 18, followed by a trip to the 19th hole to share a couple drinks with who else, but those twins again.
Today, on the fifth day of the week (fourth of the workweek, for those of you who might’ve been confused for a second there), on this Thursday golf seemed to be in the headlines. Two most recognized golfers in the world today teed it up on different continents for very different reasons. Of these two recognized link players, one is most deserving of all the glory & worthy of the spotlight, while the other is just a media puppet, which has been created solely by Corporate America. While one of the individuals we relish watching every chance we get…The other, well it’s just like being force fed this USC-Nebraska matchup on Saturday by ABC & ESPN. For God’s sakes, we’ve had enough already!
Today, we’ve had a rare treat, if one would call it that. Both Tiger Woods & Michelle Wie made headlines for very different reasons…No, Michelle didn’t win her first professional tournament. Ironically, it was Tiger making more news as he bowed out of the first round of the World Match Play Championship to fellow American Shaun Micheel 4 and 3 in a tune up for the Ryder Cup next week. Well there goes Tiger’s streak of five straight tournaments… The latest Tiger winning streak is done. Not so fast my friend…How you doing Lee Corso? Although TW lost, his streak on the PGA Tour for consecutive victories is alive. Well, how is that…I thought golf is golf? If somebody’s good, they’re good…If somebody’s bad, they’re bad. No wonder why I’m not very good at this game! Come to find out golf isn’t as always as it appears to be. So Tiger looses & his streak remains intact…Is that something like the other night when Derek Jeter stepped to the plate four times & never had an official at bat so his hit streak remained? I give up peeps!
From the greatest golfer on the planet, now we go to the most laughable golfer on the face of the earth…My favorite gal, Michelle Wie. Yes, she’s at it again…Another exemption to play in a PGA Tour event. None another than the prestigious 84 Lumber Classic in Farmington, Pa…A hot bed for golf. I’m pleased to announce that the Wieser did make it through the entire first round…Little Michelle didn’t succumb to heat exhaustion on this day. Although perhaps she should of…Watching her play yet again with the big boys (well so to speak, the big boys are preparing for the Ryder Cup), made me sick to my stomach. For the life of me I can’t seem to figure out what is all the infatuation with her? Wow, a 16-year old can play golf…Guess what, Freddy Adu is about the same and he can kick the shit out of a soccer ball & almost bend it like Beckham. So in another PGA tournament, Michelle shoots an opening round of 76 (+4) which has her tied for 113th place out of 142…Only 12 shots off the lead.
So this makes her 11th start in a professional men's event. Am I the only one who’s tired of this getting rammed down my throat too? Why, the greatest female golfer in the world, Annika Sorenstam, was one and done. Now as we all know, this is partly Michelle’s doing, but partly the sponsors doing as well. I don’t know about you, but if I was running a PGA event, trying to create interest & dollars, wouldn’t the better business decision here would be to get Annika back on the PGA Tour instead of Michelle. If it’s all about the Benjamins, wouldn’t the best female golfer in the world provide more revenue, than somebody who has done this now 11 times. Next, I suppose Michelle will be asking for a sponsor exemption to be a member of the U.S. Ryder Cup Team next week. After all her play does warrant it, now doesn’t it? What was Tom Lehman thinking by leaving her off…If Phil Mickelson can make the team, why can’t Michelle? Match her up with Tiger, now there’s a potent one-two combination for next week…Why the Europeans wouldn’t stand a chance. Sorry, I got to wrap the baby up…I have an 8:00 tee time tomorrow. I’m in a women's over 70 golf tournament…Time to show these Granny Nanny’s who’s king of the jungle. Must give thanks to my sponsor Metamucil for pulling some strings to allow me to participate in this event.
