Thoughts On The Yankees, Around the Horn and The Trade Deadline

I can't watch ESPN anymore. It's awful.

I don't know when it went from being sports news to sports crap.

Maybe I have just begun to notice it more and more as my knowledge of sports grew. I use to love watching Around the Horn and PTI. Now I can barely stand listening to the show of asinine banter.

Here's the problem with Around the Horn. Your taking sports writers who focus on certain markets; like Jay Mariotti in Chicago. I'm sure he knows the Cubs and Bulls inside and out. However, he doesn't cover the Yankees. How can he formulate a correct opinion of what the Yankees should or shouldn't have done at the trade deadline if he's not aware of who our prospects are and how good they are. On Around the Horn he suggested the Yanks should have traded Joba Chamberlain for Gagne. In fact he said it in an insulting fashion to the extent of "the Yanks kept Joba Chamberlain instead of Eric Gagne? Are you serious?"

It's frustrating to hear this as aaseball fan living in NY and following the Yankees. I'm sure Jay would have been up in arms if the Cubs had traded 5 tool stud prospect Felix Pie for unequal value.

I digress

Anyway, Mr. Mariotti in the words of Silent Bob; Bitch what you don't know about Joba Chamberlain could fill the grand fucking canyon. Let me educate you!

Joba is nasty. Filthy in fact. He proved himself in AA, moved up and just housed AAA Scranton/Wilkes Barre. He's throwing pure gas, in his last appearance he hit 99-100 on the gun. He threw 13 pitches, 10 for strikes. Secondly, Jay, Chamberlain is getting called up to the big leagues soon. While he is no sure thing he has alot of potential. I can tell you this It would have been idiotic to trade Joba for Gagne. Joba could fetch more than Gagne at this point. Furthermore the Rangers weren't even demanding Gagne. We could have gotten away with trading Ian Kennedy (who while a good prospect is getting over-protected. He's not a front line starter. He's a 3 at best more realistically a 4.)

So Jay before you make a statement try to learn your facts.

...With that being said the Yankees should have traded for Eric Gagne at the trade deadline.

I'm all aboard the Luis Vizcaino bandwagon. Before his last appearance he hadn't given up an earned run since July 4th. He'd be an ideal 7th inning guy.

Vizcaino and Gagne bridging the gap to Mo would make for a very successful bullpen. Especially when you factor in the surprisingly effective Myers and Vilone and the wild cards in Joba and Edwar Rameriez.

Had we made the Gagne trade we would have been able to trade both Farnsworth and Proctor.

I loved the Wilson Betemit for Scott Proctor trade, I just wish Farnsworth was following him out of town. Proctor is a 30 year old below average reliever. Besides that Torre has absoutely abused his arm this year. In exhange for what I believe to be damaged goods the Yanks got Betemit, while not great, is an outstanding super-sup. For now he can platoon at first with Andy Phillips. Betimit is a 27 year old switch hiter but he hits much better as a lefty. Agaisnt right handing pithcing he's hitting .285/.349/.463. Not awful, he never has been given a chance to start a whole season and still may have room to grow. The fact that we got anyone for Proctor is remarkable. If nothing else it's addition by subtraction. I wish we could have done the same for Kyle. If we had to pay to get rid of him so be it. Once again adittion by subtraction.

In an ideal world we could have gone with 12 pitchers on roster

Clemens Wang Pettite Moose Hughes

Vilone Britton Myeres Chamberlain Vizcaino Gagne Rivera

That looks pretty good to me.

(By the way quick side note: For anyone who thinks moving Joba to relief is going to stunt his growth, remember Joba is on a pitch count this year, he was close to being shut down anyway. In fact moving him to relief is going to help him keep his pitch count in manageable numbers.)

Alas we didn't get Gagne, but it's not the end of the world.

What people forget is that two big deadline acquisitions are going be Giambi and Hughes.

This team, while maybe not close to catching the Red Sox, will certainly be in contention for the wild card. With our pitching and hitting healthy this team can make a whole lot of noise in the playoffs.

It feels good to write that for the first time all year.

"What people forget is that two big deadline acquisitions are going be Giambi and Hughes."

Everyone has injuries...its the way pretty much any sports season goes...

Look at the phillies...they're a few games above .500 and are currently missing 2 starters, a few relievers at any given time, they're All-star 2b, and 3 outfielders...

Injuries (like excuses) are like assholes...everyone has one...(unless you're manny stiles...apparently)

a roided up 1b for the 2nd (i think) best offensive team in baseball...not sure if it'll help a lot... And a good rookie pitcher...i think he'll win more games than he loses this year, but to depend on a rookie pitcher, coming off an injury is asking a lot...

I'm suprised there were no rumors about the Yanks going after Guthrie, speaking of good rookie pitchers...

I agree with you about Mariotti. However, I'm not sure just how "big" Giambi is going to be.

I think Giambi needs more credit. Playing off and on hurt he still put up a .263/.380/.436 line and if he can match what he did last year .253/.414/.558 it'll certainly be another big bat to this lineup. However I tihnk Phil is the key. Look at the success Gaillardo is having in Milwaukee. Hughes is going to impact the Yankees in the same way.

Hughes and Giambi coming back obviously can't hurt at all, and will undoubtably help this team. I feel that Hughes will be huge as a 5th starter, and to rid our rotation of Igawa is key, because he is flat out not ready. Noone is saying Giambi and Hughes are going to save the world, but help, definitely. Giambi, I think, would be best off the bench, and maybe two or three starts at DH a week, all depending on how hot/cold he is. Moreover, Hughes needs to be that bridge from our 4th to our 1st starter, while hopefully winning a few games in the process.

With Betemit, that gives us a versatile defender/hitter off the bench. Getting rid of Proctor will probably be beneficial, and I agree, if the Yankees could have gotten a similar if not better deal for Farnsworth, that could have helped down the stretch as the Yankees make a push to make up some games on Boston and the wildcard contenders.

Haha, good point. But really, its more excitement about getting rid of an ineffective proctor than adding a decent bench player.

Just curious, do you know what the proposed Gagne deal was for the Yanks? Was it straight up Chamberlain for Gagne? Theo Epstein was on the radio this afternoon commending the Yanks for not getting rid of Chamberlain. I agree, you don't trade blue-chip pitching prospects, it too often turns against you down the road.

The Rangers wanted Chamberlain, obviously, but from what I heard they would have settled for Ian Kennedy. Still not sure if it's a deal worth making...

The Gagne talks with the Yankees were not at all serious. I doubt they even got to the point of discussing players. Once the Yankees realized they couldn't trade Farnsworth, they decided, rightfully so, that two fat, overpaid, underperforming guys in the bullpen was a road they didn't want to take. I hear Cashman is still laughing at Theo.

(Not looking at kelsdad) but what's the minus for (you know its my pet peeve)...Its true...Gagne has said he wants to close and he sure as shit has a better shot at taking Papsmear's spot over Rivera's, both this year and in the future...(assuming the yanks resign him)...plus how would it look to rivera if the yanks got gagne...

I agree about around the horn, but you kind of come of as just being a pissed off fan. Mariotti was giving his opinion, and if you work in the national media you know the Yankees pretty well because they are jammed down everyones throat. And if you really wanted to point out sports crap on ESPN, look at that stupid Who's Now segment. What does it mean to be more now than another athlete? At least Around the Horn still discusses sports issues. Other than that your thoughts on the Yankees were pretty good, but just because someones opinion is different than yours doesn't make it crap. Its just different.

I agree about ESPN sucking and Mariotti being a douchebag, but couldn't the same thing be said about all of us, that we shouldn't be forming opinions on teams other than our own??

It seems that the media feels that since the Yankees have made the playoffs for the last 12 years & that they have the largest payroll in baseball, that they should just go and get rid of all of their big prospects b/c that is what they have always done. It is about time that the Yankees keep their prospects & go for the long haul.

That's the point of around the horn, to hear journalists' opinions from across the country. If they all agreed the show would suck. I like it the way it is.

The only time they agree is when they have to, like when pat tillman died or some other tragedy where if they said something else they'd get fired following the paper toss.

No, I disagree. I don't care if Marotti would have said "Oh, They should have traded Chamberlain" but the way his discounted Joba shows that he doesn't even know who he is. If I am in his position (which I hope one day to be) I would be damn sure to be doing some research before I make bold statements like that one.
