This man is not an American League All-Star

Another start, another dominating performance for Francisco Liriano. This time, it comes in the best hitter's park in the American League, with Liriano dishing out 7 sterling innings, stirking out 8, and lowering his ERA to 1.83. With the win, he is now 10-1, becoming one of just 11 pitchers in the American League with double-digit wins, even though he hasn't been starting all year. As usual, let's go over some numbers:

AL ERA

  1. Francisco Liriano - 1.83
  2. Johan Santana - 2.76
  3. John Lackey - 2.88
  4. Justin Verlander - 3.01
  5. Roy Halladay - 3.02

AL K/9

  1. Francisco Liriano - 10.39
  2. Scott Kazmir - 9.73
  3. Johan Santana - 9.51
  4. Felix Hernandez - 8.51
  5. Ted Lilly - 8.41

AL WHIP

  1. Francisco Liriano - 0.97
  2. Johan Santana - 0.99
  3. John Lackey - 1.02
  4. Mike Mussina - 1.04
  5. Roy Halladay - 1.05

Not too shabby.

Offensively, it wasn't a great day for the Twins, but they did pound out 14 hits. One of them was a solo HR by Torii Hunter, his 14th of the year. Jason Bartlett and Shannon Stewart got the rest of the RBI in the 4-0 victory.

In the rest of the division, the Chicago White Sox lost again to Boston, putting Minnesota 8 games behind them for the wildcard. However, it appears the Detroit Tigers may never lose. They beat Seattle again, leaving the Twins still 11 games behind them at this point.

On the hill Sunday for the Twins will be Johan Santana pitching against the always dangerous John Koronka! The Twins will look to head into the break into a high note, and maybe cut the lead down to 10.

Come on Twins, enough of this Liriano argument. The guy is great, but the All-Star game is a popularity contest. He's be an all-star for years to come.

He's be...haha. just kidding, i didnt know liriano led all those categories. but, rules are rules and not EVERYONE can go. even if 60 people were allowed to be on each team there would still be snubs

I think that when teams gain familiarity to him, Liriano's stats will go up. That's not to say he hasn't done a terrific job, I just think it will even out as time goes on.

Let it go already. He's not the first (or the best) player ever to get snubbed for the Mid-Summer Classic.

So, Santana probably won't be pitching in the AS game if he's pitching sunday...why not pull him out in favor of liriano...even though ozzie will probably just add freddy garcia to the team because he has more wins the beuhrle (10 to 9)...

Part of me thinks that the All Star game should combine the current year's performance with a little bit of longevity. The exception to that rule would be a rookie or young player having an utterly amazing season. Lirano is pretty darn close to qualifying for the exception, I think. Right along with Travis Hafner...though Hafner's been doing it for 3 seasons now.

On another snub note, apparently MLB asked both Terry Francona and Schilling if either wanted Schill to be part of the Final Vote, and both said no.

No All-Star team will ever be perfect. It's great to debate for a few days, but its time now to just enjoy the game for what it is.

Heh, I realize I should just let it go (since Hafner is just as, if not more deserving), but I'm more so just trying to bring more praise for Liriano. He's just been amazing this year, as everyone probably knows by now, it just doesn't hurt to keep pointing it out after another good outing. :)

That's not really possible. But he is an up-and-coming star on my favorite baseball team. So he has that going for him.

If there is no fall off for Lirano, he and Santana could end up leading the Twins to a World Series all by themselves. The AL Central Division is looking mighty scary for the rest of the decade.
