This just in: Santana is good at pitching

He is arguably the best pitcher in the league right now. In a league, that is, where pitching is not only in high demand, but held in high regard. He's got it at all, he's aggressive, smart, and his "stuff" is almost unhitable. When he's on, he could throw a no hitter. He's won the Cy Young, and while his win numbers aren't impressive this season, his dominating fashion speaks for itself.

Tonight, Santana was on and almost threw one. He was superbly dominant, giving eight innings, two hits, no runs, and 17 strikeouts. Had he gone all 9 (he was at 112 pitches) he had a chance to tie the most strikeouts in nine innings - 20. Still, 17 strikeouts are insane, talk about giving your team a chance. He goes deep into the game, in a dominating fashion, if he had any kind of offense behind him he might win 30 games.

If the Twins can't pay this guy what he's going to be worth in two years, some have suggested that they trade him for a slew of young talent. My gut feeling is, that he won't be back after his contract is up, that's just how the Twins work. The Twins don't have the money to pay a player roughly $20 million a year - which is what he could easily command on the open market. Knowing their love for minor league prospects, it's likely they'll trade him for a dozen picks or players to be named later. For their sake though, they can't afford to lose him for nothing.

This just in is a comedic look at an almost inhuman athlete, usually after some inhuman act. This is a reflection of how amazing their accomplishment was.

Too bad for Johan that he is only 28. It will be at least another 10 years before he can cash in wearing pinstripes in New York.

He's a great pitcher, in this era. But back in the 90's, he'd barely be able to hold a candle to RJ, Clemens, Maddux, Glavine, Pedro, Smoltz. Too bad he's 28 and still hasn't hit 100 career wins...peaking late, just like Ryan Howard.

I disagree that he wouldn't compare to the best pitchers of the 90s. While I think Pedro and Randy Johnson were the class of pitching in the 90s, I'd put Johan up against any other pitcher from that era. I do agree that it's an incredible shame that he's peaking in his late 20s and not sooner. But, look at it this way, better to peak from age 26-33 than to go the way of Kerry Wood.

The reason why he hasn't had 100 career wins yet is because his career "really" started very late. From 2000-2002, he only won 11 games. And if he played in the 90s, I'm sure he would've been just as good as Johnson, Clemens, Pedro, Maddux, or Glavine, like Ea34 said.

I think it's very difficult to compare players from different eras, but why wouldn't he? Especially comparing him to Maddux, I would say Santana is better in every way - he's got more pitches, more power, and his location is just as good.

Also, his win total is skewed because his team sucks offensively. I'd like to know how many ND he's had. Just look at Randy Johnson a couple of years ago when he won the Cy Young. His win total wasn't overly impressive, but his ERA was super low.

Santana gets shelled once in a while (just like every pitcher), but he's so overpowering most of the time that his numbers outside of wins are ridiculous. Also, check out how often he goes 7 innings or longer, I would say he's the elite pitcher right now. I'm not even a Twins fan, in fact, I'm an Indians fan, so I see this guy destroy my team very often.

Looks like the day of 20 strikeout games are over with the pitch counts determining how long a pitcher stays on the mound.
